Rosh Hashanah
A False Talmudic Festival Exposed

      "Why do you also transgress the mitzvah (commandment) of Elohim (God) because of your tradition?!" (Matt.15:3, NKJV)

    A great many messianics have been celebrating the Talmudic 'New Year' on Yom Teruah and the day after (today) and since this is not a scriptural festival I felt it was important to set the record straight so that we are in no doubt as to what Yahweh's will is. This is one of the many errors of Judaism that true believers should have no part of.

    You have only to examine the writings of Jewish scholars to discover how this Talmudic festival evolved over time. The descriptive, 'Rosh Hashanah' did not in fact come into official use until the third century after Messiah, somewhere between 200 and 220 AD (CE) when the Mishnah of the Talmud was being compiled and codified. The idea of 'Rosh Hashanah' started being invented by the Rabbis around 10 BC (BCE). They not only renamed Yom Teruah but also reinvented it, turning their new 'Rosh Hashanah' into a two day holiday because of all the confusion that surrounded their own calendaric system, a corruption of the original Creation Calendar that had become a pot pourri of the Roman, Babylonian and Biblical systems. Because they weren't sure when Rosh Chodesh or the New Moon began (the day each new month is set), they decided to add an extra day to accommodate the two conflicting systems of interpretation. Today only Reconstructionist Jews observe a one day 'Rosh Hashanah'. (For the correct way to calculate the New Moon, please see Rosh Chodesh: Yahweh's Gift of the New Moon)

    Until the Babylonian Exile, when so much corruption took place - corruption that has found its way into modern Judaism and Messianic Judaism - the first month of Aviv (renamed 'Nisan' by the rabbis) - which is in the spring at the end of our Roman March or beginning of April - was the absolute and only ISRAELITE NEW YEAR. From this one day - the first Rosh Chodesh or New Moon of the year - the following were established:

    • 1. The dates for the counting of the Hebrew months;
    • 2. The cycle of the annual moedim or festivals, including the Sabbath;
    • 3. The counting of the years of a king's reign;

    Other minor 'new years' also existed at other times of the year per force (because nature demanded it and therefore, indirectly, Yahweh) which included:

    • 4. The tithing of animals (specifically flocks and herds); and
    • 5. The new year for trees.

    However neither of these were never 'the' New Year which was always Aviv 1.

    After the Babylonian exile the rabbis took the 'New Year for Trees' which falls on Yom Teruah and named it Tu B'Shevat after the Babylonian name for the seventh month - Shevat (the Bible only names the first month, the remainder are simply numbered, something we must also do). Out of this minor new year the rabbis transformed Yom Teruah into a special new year 'for years' in place of Aviv 1 and falsely called it the 'Head of the Year' or 'Rosh Hashanah'. Into this mutilated Yom Teruah they injected a heavy dose of myth to give it a special prominence and new meaning. Thus Judaism insists - without any concrete biblical warranty whatsoever - that on their 'Rosh Hoshanah' the world and Adam were made. To quote the words of a rabbi, on this day the Jews believe that:

      "G-d takes stock of Creation and everything and everyone in it, so just as the head on one's body directs the rest of the body, so do does the judgments of G-d on Rosh Hashanah direct the events on every day of the new year. Also, just as the body needs the brain in one's head to function properly, time also has it's 'head' in that Rosh Hashanah is the 'head' of the year. Like the brain being the nerve center of the entire body, Rosh Hashanah is the nerve-center of time and the Hebrew/Jewish calendar. While it only consists of a small segment in the time-cycle, its effect over the coming year can be enormous and immeasurable; just as a small glitch in the brain can have a huge impact on the entire body, any lapses and deviations on Rosh Hashanah can result in major harm to us and our life for the remainder of the year" (Elimelech David Ha-Levi).

    If 'Rosh Hashanah' so finely tunes the whole of the year that follows, as Jews claim, why have the rabbis not resolved this two day business? (Truth is, they can't, not without abandoning their traditional calendar). But far, far more important than that is the fact that whilst this is a cute story, it is pure fable, one of the many "Jewish fables" we are warned against (Titus 1:14). Worse, this fable - even though it sounds 'biblical' - actually destroys the true meaning of Yom Teruah which is to announce the Second Coming of Messiah, judge those who have refused Him or disobeyed Him, and reset the calendar for the Millennium. Yom Teruah is the one day all true believers are watching out for, but if they gather to celebrate 'Rosh Hashanah' they will be looking out for the wrong thing. The true 'head of years' is at Aviv 1, not the first day of the seventh month.

    Every lie that destroys true divine tavnith (pattern) immerses people in yet one more layer of darkness. Our purpose is to strip the lies away so that people can finally see the emet (truth)! I will now prove that Rosh Hashanah is not only a lie but open rebellion against Yahweh. Let us see what Yahweh Himself says about the New Year:

      "Now Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron (two witnesses) in the land of Egypt, saying, 'This [first] month [of Aviv] shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you" (Ex.12:1-2, NKJV)

    This is not an option or a suggestion liable to future modification by later generations of rabbis but a commandment - Aviv shall be the beginning of months, the first month of the year - in other words, THE NEW YEAR MONTH. That means that Aviv 1 is NEW YEAR'S DAY because Yahweh says so.

    To declare that the first day of the seventh month to be 'New Year's Day' or the 'Head of the Year' or 'Rosh Hashanah' is therefore willful disobedience - it is rebellion. How is this then different from the Christians who declare the Day of the Roman pagan god Janus or 1 January to be 'New Year's Day'? What's the difference? The fact that this false Jewish New Year has been superimposed on a true festival - Yom Teruah - does not suddenly make it kosher.

    Let us be 100% clear - the Eternal Elohim (God), Yahweh, has declared Aviv 1 in the spring to be the Israelite New Year. Anyone who disagrees with this rejectes the plain and unambiguous sense of Scripture. Those who alter Yahweh's Word to fit in with Jewish tradition immediately ally themselves with Satan's Plan as prophesied by Daniel:

      "[Satan] shall speak pompous words against El Elyon (the Most High), shall persecute the set-apart ones (saints) of El Elyon (the Most High), and shall intend to change times (zemam - Aram. = Calendar & Feasts) and Torot (laws)" (Dan.7:25, NKJV).

    Any divine moed (appointment) change is the work of the devil and whether anyone likes it or not the seventh month of the year is not the first.

      "The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Chag haMatzah) you shall keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, in the appointed time of the month of Aviv; for in the month of Aviv you came out from Egypt. All that open the womb are Mine, and every male firstborn among your livestock, whether ox or sheep. But the firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb. And if you will not redeem him, then you shall break his neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And none shall appear before Me empty-handed. Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering (Sukkot) at the year's END" (Ex.34:18-22, NKJV).

    Here you can plainly see Yahweh declaring that the autumnal feasts are at YEAR'S END, not at year's beginning! This is not possible if you believe Jewish fables telling you that the first day of the seventh month is New Year's Day. It absolutely and definitely is not! It's a lie.

    Worse, in some respects, than deliberately disobeying the mitzvah (commandment) and breaking tavnith (pattern) to set the New Year from Aviv 1, is what this satanic counterfeit called Rosh Hashanah is telling us spiritually: for it is nullifying the meaning of the spring and summer festivals and what they mean in terms of the Plan of Salvation. 'Rosh Hashanah' puts harvesting before planting and teaches that you can reap without sowing! It is inverting the Plan of Salvation by telling us us to do things the wrong way round. If we plan to face Yom Kippur - the Day of Judgement - before we have received Messiah at Pesach, started getting sin out of our lives through Chag haMatzah, been born-again at Yom haBikkurim, and before we have taken betrothal covenants of Torah-obedience at Shavu'ot, what shall we end with? Nothing! We will be judged as unsaved and as having no harvest at all.

    'Rosh Hashanah' is therefore the ultimate perversion of salvation by emunah (faith) for its false tavnith (pattern) is teaching salvation through works or legalism, which is pretty much what Judaism - like all false religion - teaches. The seed of emunah (faith) has to be planted before the fruit of the Ruach (Spirit) outpoured in good works can be harvested to the glory of the Master. A person who arrogantly claims to start his Gospel walk at 'Rosh haShanah' is like the man taking a short-cut into the Kingdom, claiming the rewards of faithlessness, just as Judaism does. 'Rosh haShanah' is pretended salvation without Messiah. It's claiming an élitist's right to heaven without repenting, trusting and obeying the true mitzvot (commandments).

    As such, then, I have to state unapologetically that the implied teaching of 'Rosh Hashanah' is rank heresy. It doesn't matter how prettily it is dressed up, it doesn't matter that it's a tradition nearly 2,000 years old (neo-pagan traditions like Christmas and New Year's Day are a lot older), and it doesn't matter that the people who celebrate it - and their leaders - claim to be God's 'chosen people', because Yahweh's 'chosen people' have in the past (and they are no different today) descended into the darkest and deepest apostacy anyway. Yahweh is no respecter of the flesh. We are not to follow people or man-made traditions, but Yahweh's Scriptural Emet (Truth).

    If you have been celebrating Rosh Hashanah then I urge you to make teshuvah - repent - of this anti-messiah festival and instead return to the authentic Yom Teruah. And what a prize for Satan to capture at the last minute those claiming to follow Yahweh just before the day of Yom Kippur which either spells their doom or seats them at the table of the Marriage Feast of the Lamb...with so little time left to repent!

    Finally, the counterfeit Rosh Hashanah is heralded with the sounding of the ram's horn or shofar whereas the authentic Yom Teruah is heralded with the sounding of Twin Silver Trumpets because it is Rosh Chodesh and the New Moon is always heralded with twin silver-trumpets. (For more about this, see my devotional from yesterday).

    The Judeans in the past have been warned most strictly by Yah'shua (Jesus) not to follow the traditions of the elders and both their spiritual descendants - and we - are being warned again:

      "Why do you also transgress the mitzvah (commandment) of Elohim (God) because of your tradition?!" (Matt.15:3, NKJV)

    It was these transgressors who sent Messiah to the cross. And it is the same transgressors who would do the same to His talmidim (disciples).

    Get right with Yahweh and cease observing the false tradition of Rosh Hashanah!
