Report Update: 29 August 2020
- 1. Orphanage Projects
On three different occasions we have assumed responsibility for orphanages in India (Madras/Chennai) and Africa (Kenya) and in each case we have recommended that donors pay directly to the orphanages rather than to us to cut out needless administration costs. We are not currently operating an orphanage but we can point you to orphanages we personally know and recommend if you are interested. So we are not currently (2020) soliciting funds for orphanages. Check out our online discussion groups for further information.
- 2. Literature Production
There has been little in the way of printed material production now for many years owing to the very difficult financial situation we have found ourselves in and the prohibitive cost of shipping from Sweden. It makes little economic sense publishing in the West and shipping abroad as all our materials are now digitised and available free on our website. However, there are various areas in the world still without reliable internet access, either for logistical or economic reasons (though 5G will solve the former), so in some places are still reliant on pamphlets, bookets, etc.. There is an urgent need in all Third World countries we now supply for a continuous flow of materials. This requires:
- 1. The hiring of inexpensive publishers in the developing world to print and ship larger projects like books and study guides in individual countries or areas (like Southern Africa), with a long-term goal of
- 2. Establishing our own printing facilities - heavy-duty photocopiers, PCs and printer systems - for the publication of smaller items (pamphlets, tracts, etc.) in large numbers, in local regions. This is, however, a distant project as our attempts in the 2010's to set one up in East Africa did not come to fruition owing to local problems and the financial crisis since 2008.
- 3. Optical Fiber Cable & Computer Equipment Refurbishment at HQ
MOST URGENT
Deadline 30 September 2020
We face two existential crises at our Headquarters in Sweden:
- a. In our prioretisation of the allocation of resources to the East Africa Mission, our equipment at headquarters in Sweden has been neglected and has either largely worn out or was destroyed in a flood during the winter of 2018/19 for which we got a pittance from the insurers. We have been without a printer for over two years now (a major need, in fact), our photocopier is no longer serviceable and has nearly worn out (so we cannot produce decent quality literature), and much of our PC equipment is nearly defunct. We are managing a skelton operation using old PC's and laptops and ancient operating systems (mostly XP and Windows 7) and software. We urgently need a complete refurbishment owing to the huge demand for professionally-made videos etc.. The need in this area can now no longer be deferred to keep the ministry functioning smoothly.
- b. A second, more immediate crisis arose in May 2020 and has not, as yet, been resolved. At the end of November 2020 telephone landlines in Sweden will be permanently closed in our area, requiring the purchase of an optical fiber-net cable. The other alternative (5G mobile network) is not optional both because of the health risk and the expensive operating costs). So buying an optical cable is the only option. If we do not have the funds to complete this operation by the end of September, it will not be possible to lay cables again in our harsh sub-artic weather before next spring, which would mean our being offline for 4-5 months. The estimated cost for the cable is SEK 25,000 (around US$3,000) + accessories.
