And he drew near
Posted by Lev/Christopher on January 2, 2009 at 4:47am in Torah Studies
Shabbat Shalom Kol Yisrael. This week our Parsha is Vayigash (And he drew near) Bereshith 44:18 – 47:27. Our Haftarah portion is Yehezk'el (Ezekiel) 37:15 – 28 Our suggested Brit Chadasha reading is Acts 7:9—16. Please read Tehillim (Psalms) 37 and 41.
Please read the entire Torah Parsha and the additional Scriptural readings. Due to pressing work obligations and medical appointments, i did not have sufficienty time to do a commentary this week. However, Let us please keep in mind this week the overall synopsis of Vayigash. In a nutshell, Yoseph reveals his true nature to his brothers, the same brothers who plotted to kill him but finally sold him into slavery. Once he spoke the words “I am Yoseph...” and his brothers realized who it was that spoke to them, the immediately feared vengeance and retribution.
When people who are not spiritual encounter truly spiritual people they fail to recognize the good. They expect those who are on a higher level to act as they themselves would act. Instead, Yoseph treated their treachery with kindness and forgiveness.
Why was he able to do this? Simply because he was able to see the overall picture. Yoseph was able to see Yahweh's plan for Yisrael and recognize that what happened to him personally was all part of the divine, overall plan.
When we learn to see Yahweh's plan for our lives, and how we must fit into a larger overall plan, we are less likely to complain about our circumstances. We must remember that Yoseph practiced “V'Ahavta - la-Ray-ehka - ka-moe-ka” “You Shall Love your neighbor as yourself.”
There is little doubt that in the sometimes violent and dangerous world in which we live this is a difficult concept to put into practice. Nevertheless, let us pray that we will have the courage to be able to do so when it counts the most – at least as much as possible. Let us also pray that we can see more of The Light, more of Yahweh's plan, and less of our own.
