They want the King to intercede to stop plans to make terminations more readily available
There’s been a new move in the protests in Spain against the government’s plans to liberalise abortion legislation which, last Saturday, saw tens of thousands protesting the reforms in Madrid.
A pressure group, who call themselves ‘Bebé-Aído’, have sent plastic replicas of a 12-week foetus to each member of the Spanish royal family, including all the King’s grandchildren. They say they decided to do so in the hope that the King will intercede to have the proposed legislation withdrawn from its progress through parliament and returned to the government.
Their spokeswoman, Beatriz Molina, described the legislation as ‘immoral, which only serves to end Spanish lives’. She said in a press release that King Baudoin of Belgium refused his Royal Assent to his country’s abortion reform and that Spain’s Queen, Doña Sofía, has expressed her opposition to such procedures.
Público reports that the group first came up with the idea of creating the plastic models this July and claim to have already sent replicas to the 350 MPs in the lower chamber of parliament, to the Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, and the Equality Minister, Bibiana Aído, amongst others. They say they want the Spanish public to decide for themselves ‘if a 12-week baby they hold in their hands is, or is not, a human being’.
Current legislation in place since 1988 only permits a termination in the case of rape, if the foetus is seriously deformed, or if the mother’s physical or mental health is at risk. The government plans to allow unconditional abortion at 14 weeks for 16 year olds and upwards without parental consent being required.
