Carpo
Exposing the Fault-Finding Demon

"Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our Elohim (God), and the power of His Messiah (Christ) have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our Elohim (God) day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death" (Rev.12:10-11, NKJV).

One of the most spiritual debilitating experiences is to live around people who are constantly fault-finding, making petty complaints, fussing, nitpicking and quibbling. It's rather like slowly drowning. At first you let it wash over you as you would a single irritating fly but the more it comes at you, the more overwhelmed you get, especially when you're tired. Fussy, petilent, querulous and pettifogging people, who love to criticise, deprecate, condemn and censure have a serious spiritual issue, and though it is tempting to judge them as possessing a character default as one might a rogue gene, the truth it there's a demon behind it. And the name of the demon is Carpo.

I didn't know this until yesterday morning when Yahweh woke me up and simply spoke a single word to me: 'Carpo'. The following evening I decided to follow the trail to see where it might lead and within ten minutes I knew exactly what I was dealing with.

Having grown up in an environment where this spirit was common (though mercifully I was given several breathers by being sent to boarding school ... I didn't realise the blessing of this painful separation until much, much later), I have come to know it inside-out. The demon Carpo has found its way into the English language from the Greeks to the old Norsemen who had the verb, karpa, meaning to 'brag' or 'wrangle' which passed into Middle English as carpen, literally to 'speak' or 'prate' (the latter surviving in Norwegian meaning the same) and then passing into modern English as to 'carp'. The word is usually used in a doublet when we speak of 'carping criticism'.

Like a machine gun firing bullet after bullet, carping criticism is a relentless stream of little accusations that accumulate day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year into an overwhelming and overpowering, destructive tidal-wave of accusation. Because it isn't some single, huge, outrageous accusation that would in the normal course of events strike us to the ground and provoke instant retaliation, we tend to ignore little accusations to our cost. They may not be 'big' as such, but enough of them will make the 'big' ones seem like pygmies by comparison.

The little things absolutely matter which is why Yahweh has given us the Feast of Unleavened Bread or Chag haMatazah to remind us that we are to pay meticulous attention to even the small sins with a view to getting them out of our lives. The 'little' condemnations and accusations such as the carpic critic throws in a never ending barrage is enough to destroy everything else that he or she does that is good:

"Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these mitzvot (commandments), and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven" (Matt.5:19, NKJV).

You may think that wailing, whimpering, whining, fretting, remonstrating, fussing, niggling, nagging complaining and fault-finding are nothing but these sins stand you in great danger of being consigned to some backwater in the eternities. That's why there are multiple resurrections and a graded salvation and it's why people who deny these things tend to downplay the so-called 'lesser sins'. They couldn't be more serious - and dangerously - mistaken.

The original Carpo was a Greek goddess, so-called, and she formed a part of a female trinity called the Horai consisting of Thall, Auxo and Carpo. They were daughters of Zeus (Satan) and Themis, an untranslatable word but basically the personification of human tradition and correct customs. Themis (from which we get the English word 'theme') basically represents any custom invented by man to create social order to regulate human behaviour.

I was brought up on a strict diet of British manners and behavioural expectations. These neither flowed from Torah nor from any spontaneous desire of the lev to behave in this way and so were an artificially drilled construct. Breaking this code was rewarded with severe reprimand and occasional punishment, emotional more than anything else. I was expected to have the proverbial 'stiff upper lip', swallow my tongue if I felt something was unjust, and pretend to be well even if I was feeling desperately ill. It was artificial and it was murderous to the lev (heart). Not that the British are alone - every culture has similar codes of behaviour. No matter what they are, no matter how many 'good' features they may have, if they do not proceed naturally from the lev (heart) as a result of conviction by the Ruach (Spirit) and authentic free choice, their enforcement merely cripples the spirit. They are the codes of the 'cult of culture'.

Themis is the personification of this and with her master Satan gave birth to three daughters whose function is to enforce this demonic code of behaviour. Carpo (Xarpo in Greek) is traditionally believed to mean 'food-bringer' and in consequence of which was later assigned in mythology the rôle of being charge of autumn, ripening and harvesting. But scholar Robert Graves believes a more accurate rendition of the name is 'withering'. In other words, the effect of Carpo is to cause withering of the lev (heart). As such, this would be a perfect description of the effect of long-term carping criticism. Carpo's victims literally whither on the vine.

I was unprepared to discover, though, that there are two sets of this pagan trinity of goddesses of the seaons that included Eunomia, Diké and Eirene who were assigned in Greek mythology to be law-and-order goddesses. Upon discovering this, the Ruach (Spirit) immediately interjected and said: 'These are under the power of Lilith and Hecate, respectively.'

If you are not acqainted with the nature of these two demonesses, even if their names may be familiar to you, then I recommend that at this point you pause to read the materials I have written about them at the given links. In short, they represent two kinds of demonic agression: passive-aggression vs. active-aggression, subtle manupulation vs. crude overt control. The demonic sets these two up as good cop/bad copy systems to keep people trappened in a futile battle between those afflicted by one or the other. Thus the Lilithic Carpo will say in a whiney voice: 'Oh, you're so cruel' while the Hecatic Carpo will say aloud without mincing words, 'Yuk, you make me puke!' People who have the Lilithic and Hecatic demonic issues loathe each other's guts as a rule, as Satan intends, not realising that what they are hating are two demonic personalities whose purpose is to create civil war between people.

I don't think it is any coincidence that a European telecommnunications provider is called Carpo, nor do I think that recently to find names for software, heavenly bodies and companies, demons are more than happy to inspire them and so get a kick out of being named by the ignorant, even though they are more often than not unaware of what's happening. Ever heard of Demon Broadband or the designer, Morena from Sweden? There are thousands of such names giving honour to demons.

Hecate is not only a three-fold set of demonesses like the mythical daughters of Zeus and Themis, but so, it would seem, is the Semitic Lilith if I am correctly understanding what Yahweh is teaching me here. Both demonesses, once admitted by sin into the soul, act as an emotional narcotic killing off the lev (heart), numbing the noble feelings so that connections can be made to the angry, cold demonic. To understand how Lilith works and her links to Hecate in the human experience, check out this chart as a result of my experiences with her in deliverance ministry.

So how do people get Carpo? What is the root sin that opens door to demonic penetration, occupancy and finally to a demonic stronghold? Dissatisfaction! Carpo is the spirit of dissatisfaction and part of her carping and criticism is because she is never satisfied. Why is she never satisfied? Because she believes in the lie called self-entitlement - 'I am entitled to this because...' The spirit of self-entitelement arises from the fleshy nature and is a fruit of a lack of grace - undeserved loving kindness, unmerited favour by which talmidim (dsiciples) of Yah'shua (Jesus) are expected to live! In the same way that our sins have been paid for on the Cross by His Grace, we too are to forgive others of their sins against us, as we have been speaking about recently.

Self-entitlement is a nasty spiritual virus. It says, 'as a son/daughter/mother/father/husband/wife I am entitled to this from you' and when what is expected is not received, it mutates into resentment because it is fed by that nasty demoness called Carpo. Carpo feeds into the system of 'live up to my standard, and make me Elohim (God)' and when this worship (which is what it is, ultimately) is not received (because it is out of tavnith/pattern), it leads to the belittling of those who don't meet our carnal expectations.

Like all demonic systems, Carpo feeds off both her victim as well as the 'victim of the victim'. By encouraging those sold to the lie of self-entitlement to expect this or that and to criticise those who refuse to give it to them (because they are repelled, even if what is expected is lawful - e.g. the commandment to love one another), what it then does is causes the one with self-expectation to elevate themselves in importance by making them the centre of attention. Perhaps without realising (for all demonic systems contain an element of subtlety), they make themselves out to be greater and more important than they one they accuse of 'doing everything wrong'.

Carpo therefore exalts self-righteousness that leads to disdain and contempt for the one being criticised and attacked for not meeting expectations. It's a vile, ugly spirit that seems righteous (because what's demanded is 'good', like love, respect, compassion, etc.) when it is in fact satanic. There is zero grace in it because it's not about lifting the other person up at all. It's purpose and end is to knock the person down who makes you feel smaller. The spirit of Carpo manifestly lacks forgiveness whereas, as Paul says to the Corinthians, the ahavah (love) of Elohim (God) keeps no record of wrong-doing, because grace forgives as an habitual lifestyle.

The spirit of Carpo links strongly back to a spirit of unforgiveness. A person holding a grudge against someone (for a bigger thing in the past) may be much more attracted by, and given to, this demonic spirit. If they have an unforgiven grudge from the past against the person, they will be much more inclined to operate in the Carpo spirit by continually finding fault. Like a badger that bites and won't let go, the person possessed of Carpo instinctively and habitually criticises and finds fault because they haven't yet truly forgiven their victim for a 'root' offense from the past.

It is not a difficult thing to open the door to the demoness Carpo so long as we refuse to forgive in the way that Yahweh has commanded. By refusing to forgive we invite and feed a spirit of dissatisfaction that eventually takes us over, destroys our shalom (peace) and makes us into an ugly person whom people want to shun if they have not otherwise been guilted into hanging around to be Carpo's punchbag because, for example, they are weak-willed.

It is not uncommon when coming to the Besorah (Gospel) and seeing what Yahweh's standard is for individuals and families to suddenly become aware that we have been abused (by parents or spouses, for example). This can lead to rage and a sense of self-entitelment which we then 'demand' as a right. Because we were not loved we now demand to be loved, but the trouble is the Carpo spirit is not the Ruach haQodesh (Holy Spirit) but a mirror opposite. The Ruach (Spirit) attracts but demons repulse. Seeing that our Carpo-like behaviour repulses, we are then faced with a choice: to repent of the spirit of self-entitlement and extend grace or demand what we perceive as being 'owed' in a spirit of unforgiveness that ultimately leads to profound dissatisfaction and an outpouring from the sewers of hell of criticism and condemnation of the one for that which we feel entitled to. All we do is make everything worse and in judging those who do not meet our demonic sense of self-entitlement we are not defining who they are but who we are...something profoundly ugly. Unforgiveness that comes from admitting the spirit of Carpo is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die, a self-defeating exercise if ever there was one.

Part of the reason we sometimes think this way as that we have been badly infected with the secular, humanistic and atheistic concept of 'rights' which is just another way of saying 'self-entitlements'. Little wonder that society has become so petty, nasty, precocious and selfish because the spirit of Carpo is everywhere in the post-Christian world. The Bible instead defines relationships as a series of obligations only, with our entitlements coming solely from the One who can provide it, Yahweh-Elohim. One of the reasons - and probably the main one - why people turn to self-entitlement and rights is because they have never received a revelation from Heaven on divine grace. They have no idea what it is, never having previously been exposed to it growing up from other people because Elohim (God) has been unknown. Such cannot be blamed for their ignorance, of course. However, those who do know the grace of Elohim (God) and who do make these carnal demands - expecting their entitlements and rights - are without excuse and have committed a grave offence against the Most High. They are in rebellion in a major way. And such as are have no real shalom (peace).

Of this offense I plead guilty and is something I am working on. Yes, we all lack in what we need and should receive from human beings because of their divine obligations to us, but we can't expect from them what only Yahweh can give either directly to us or through others who are living in Him as they ought to be. This devotional was therefore written as much for myself as it was for others who have this same problem, which in the course of life is usually everyone at some point or another. If we have received salvation and the grace that comes from a regenerated lev (heart), confering upon us the power of genuine forgiveness, and we choose to succumb to Carpo, then we are in open rebellion against one of the most important mitzvot (commandments) of all and must make teshuvah (repent). Theh we can be forgiven by Yahweh for our claim to self-entitlement, receive that portion of the Ruach (Spirit) which we had previously driven out back again, and then have the power to forgive those who have, through their carnality, led us to choose not to forgive them for their wrongs in the first place. And with that we obtain real shalom (peace) and simcha (joy)!

Carpo attacks at the centre of the Besorah (Gospel) life and therefore must be treated with the greatest of seriousness. Ministers need preach about it often. Forgiveness is our perpetual obligation - we can't circumvent it and still claim to to be followers of Messiah. Therefore recognise that we have no entitlements and no rights but only the obligation to obey Heavenly Father and see people right. Then we will be free of Carpo and finally be walking in the liberty of the Ruach (Spirit) as sons and daughters of Elohim (God). Amen.
