FAQ 300
Haggis and Blood Sausage
NCW 69: August 2000 - January 2001
Q. In my country [Scotland] haggis is a national dish. Is eating this a sin?
A. Yes. Yahweh has said: "...you must not eat the blood of any bird or animal. If anyone eats blood, that person must be cut off from his people" (Lev.7:26-27, NIV). This is confirmed in the New Covenant in Acts 15:20 even for non-Jews. This prohibition, like the Noachic laws, is binding forever.
Perhaps a more serious problem in western cultures is the love of fat. Yahweh again says: "Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats" (v.22). Only eat the lean meat.
The reasons for both concern good health though abstinence from blood has another dimension as well. This has got nothing to do with blood transfusion though in our modern day of contaminated blood (e.g. HIV) there are certainly major risks.
