Liturgy of the
Master's Supper

6th Edition (2015)

Preface

The Liturgy of the Master's ('Lord's') Supper has gone through many editions since 1987 of which this is the sixth. It is based on the Didache ('the Teaching'), otherwise known as 'The Teaching of the Master to the Gentiles, through the Twelve Apostles', Section II, Part 3, 'Of the Eucahrist', and was the constitution of the Assembly of Yahweh in Syria, A.D.150. It is the oldest known liturgy of the early Messianic Community (Church).

The current format was given by revelation to the Patriarchate on 4 February 2001 and has subsequently been modified to incorporate the sacred Names of Deity, the latest edition containing some cosmetic modifications to more accurately reflect Hebraisms currently in use in the New Covenant Assemblies of Yahweh (NCAY) and Mishpachah Lev-Tsiyon (MLT).

Bible citations are either from the King James Version (KJV) or New International Version (NIV) of the Bible that have been cosmetically altered to reflect messianic terminology.

Traditionally NCAY/MLT has administered the Master's Supper each Sabbath at a quiet time convenient to the congregants that affords the opportunity for deep contemplation, either early in the quiet hours of the morning before the arrival of worshippers for the main meetings or in the quiet hours of the evening. It is the responsibility of heads of homes (family cohenim/priests) and pastors to ensure that the emblems are taken only after careful self-examination of the participants, all of whom must be baptised and christmated (confirmed) Torah-obedient members in good moral, ethical and spiritual standing as defined by the Constitution (§8), bearing in mind that to take the emblems unworthily is to bring down a curse not only on the individuals concerned but on the entire community of the NCAY/MLT branch of Messianic Israel too. This sacred meal should never be taken casually or ritualistically but only in spiritual purity. Guarding the emblems is one of the most sacred tasks of the Zaqenim (Elders) - and especially the Pastorates - of NCAY/MLT.

Though the number of times the Master's Supper may be taken is not proscribed by any hard-and-fast rule, it is up to the discretion of the family or congregational cohen (priest) to determine how often, and is rarely taken more than once weekly and not uncommonly less frequently. That greater reverence may be shown some take it only monthly. The tradition prevalent amongst many messianics and the Jehovah's Witnesses to either only eat the annual Pesach (Passover) or to take the emblems once a year, respectively, is not accepted by NCAY/MLT.

The bread should be leavened (preferably white) and the wine non-alcoholic, unfermented red grape juice (or nearest equivalent in the absence of the same).

ORDER OF THE MASTER'S SUPPER

§1a. Song I and opening Prayer

§1b. To be read aloud, carefully, unrushed and in solemnity by the administering Elder:

    The Apostle Paul said:
"For whenever you eat of this bread
    And drink this cup,
You proclaim the Master Yah'shua's death until He comes.
    Therefore, whoever eats the bread
Or drinks the cup of the Master in an unworthy manner
Will be guilty of sinning against
the body and blood of the Master.
A man ought to examine himself
Before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
For anyone who eats and drinks
Without recognising the body of the Master
Eats and drinks judgment on himself"

    (1 Corinthians 11:26-29).

§1c. The administering Elder shall pause and then continue reading aloud:

"If there be any here among the fellowship
    of the Master Yah'shua
    who has anything against another,
let him now privately take the person aside
who has given offence, or he that has been offended,
    and make restitution,
leaving aside his gift of a broken heart and a contrite spirit
by the altar of his heart.
Let the offended and he that has given offence
    profess before the people,
    afterwards professing their love
for each other before the people,
    and embrace one another
that there be no root of bitterness in any heart
in the assembly of the Congregation of Israel.
And if a man or woman has offended the Body
let him confess his sins now, and make restitution,
    and be received in love.
Then let them take up their gifts from the altar
    which they have laid aside,
that they may offer unto Yahweh a righteous sacrifice,
even a broken heart and a contrite spirit.
If there be any man or woman who cannot confess
or make restitution in whom yet abides a root of bitterness,
let him withdraw himself from the assembly --
or the assembly from said persons
to the Communion Room as shall be expedient --
until the Master's emblems have been administered
and received, that the House of Yahweh may not be polluted.
(Whereafter let them return unto the assembly)."

    (Olive Branch 275B)

§1d. Time shall be allowed for those who need to be reconciled with one another. If the administering Elder detects through the Ruach, or is aware through prior knowledge, that an unconfessed root of bitterness exists in one of the communicants, it is his sacred duty to challenge the assembly, in a spirit of firmness, kindness and humility, until the matter is resolved or any offending party unwilling to make restitution has withdrawn. He may, at his discretion, and as a last resort in order to safeguard the Master's Supper as part of his obligation and stewardship, terminate the assembly if any offending parties both refuse to reconcile or depart from the assembly. If necessary he should call for such prayer and counselling as may be required, provided it is not of undue duration owing to the time constrains on the assembly.

§2a. Song II

§2b.The Presiding Elder washes his hands and says (holding up the unbroken bread):

Blessèd art Thou, O King of the Universe, Yahweh-Elohim
Who maketh bread to come forth from the earth.
We give Thee thanks, our Father, for the life and knowledge
Thou hast made known unto us through Thy servant Yah'shua.

§3. Congregation:

For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power,
and the Glory, forever and ever
    .

§4. The administering Elder (whilst breaking the bread):

As this broken bread, once dispersed over the hills,
Was brought together and became one loaf,
So may Thy flock be brought together
From the ends of the earth into Thy Kingdom.

§5. Congregation:

For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power,
and the Glory, forever and ever
    .

§6. The administering Elder:

    Yah'shua said:
    "I tell you the truth:
He who believes has everlasting life.
I am the Bread of Life.
Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died.
But here is the Bread that comes down from Heaven,
Which a man may eat and not die.
I am the Living Bread that came down from Heaven.
If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live for ever.
    This Bread is My flesh,
Which I will give for the life of the world.
    I tell you the truth,
Unless you can eat the flesh of the Son of Man
    And drink His blood,
You have no life in you.
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life,
And I will raise him up at the last day.
For My flesh is real food
And My blood is real drink.
Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood
Remains in Me, and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent Me
And I live because of the Father,
So the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
This is the Bread that came down from Heaven.
Your forefathers are manna and died,
But he who feeds on this Bread will live forever"

    (John 6:47-58)

§7a. The Congregation shall then recite together the sacramental prayer for the bread under the leadership of the administering Elder:

    Holy Father, Yahweh-Elohim
We ask Thee in the Name of Thy Son,
    Yah'shua the Messiah,
To bless and sanctify this bread
To the souls of all those who partake of it,
That we may eat in rememberance of the body of Thy Son
    Which was broken for us;
    And witness unto Thee,
    Yahweh-Elohim, the Eternal Father,
That we are willing to take upon us the Name of Thy Son,
    And always remember Him,
    And obey His commandments
    And Keep His Covenants
Which he hath given unto us,
That we may always have the fullness
of the Ruach haQodesh to be with us. Amen

§7b. Elder:

    Yah'shua said: "Take and eat;
This is My body given for you"

    (Luke 22:19; Mark 14:22; Matthew 26:26; 1 Corinthians 11:24)

§7c. The bread will then be distributed to the communicants by the Deacons and Deaconesses using the right hand and eaten together when all have received a portion.

§8. Elder (holding up the wine, with the containing vessel opened):

Blessèd art Thou, O King of the Universe, Yahweh-Elohim
For the Holy Vine of Thy servant David,
Which Thou hast made known unto us
    Through Thy servant Yah'shua.

§9. Congregation:

Glory to Thee, world without end.

§10a. The congregation shall then recite together aloud the sacramental prayer for the wine under the leadership of the administering Elder:

    "Holy Father, Yahweh-Elohim
We ask Thee in the Name of Thy Son,
    Yah'shua the Messiah,
To bless and sanctify this wine
To the souls of all those who drink of it,
That we may do it in remembrance
    Of the New Covenant
in the blood of Thy Son,
Which was shed for us on the Cross,
That through repentance and faith in His Name
We might receive forgiveness of sins
And the purification of our souls.
    We drink this cup
    As a witness unto Thee,
    Yahweh-Elohim, the Eternal Father,
That we do always remember Him,
That we might have the fullness
Of the Ruach haQodesh to be with us. Amen.

§10b. Elder:

Yah'shua said: "Drink you all of it.
    For this is My blood
    Of the New Covenant
Which is poured out for many
    for the forgiveness of sins"

    (Matthew 26:27-28)

§10c. The administering Elder shall then pour the wine into separate cups which shall then be distributed on a tray with the right hand by the Deacons and Deaconesses and then drunk together using the right hand.

§11. The administering Elder shall then give thanks with these words:

"Thou art worthy to take the Book of Life
And to open the seals thereof,
    O Lamb of Elohim,
    For Thou wast slain,
And hast redeemed us to Yahweh by Thy blood
Out of every tribe and language
    and people and nation.
Thou hast made us to be kings
and priests to serve our Elohim,
And we shall reign on the earth"

    (Revelation 5:9-10)

§12. The assembly shall then recite together aloud the following prayer under the leadership of the administering elder:

Thanks be to Thee, Holy Father,
    Yahweh-Elohim,
    For Thy sacred Name
Which Thou hast caused to dwell in our hearts,
    And for the knowledge
    and faith and everlasting life
Which Thou hast revealed to us
    through Thy servant Yah'shua.

§13. The administering Elder shall then say:

Thou, O Almighty Elohim and Father,
    Yahweh-Elohim,
    Hast created all things
    for Thine own Name's sake;
    To all men and women
Thou hast given food and drink to enjoy,
That they may give thanks unto Thee,
But unto us Thou hast graciously given
    spiritual food and drink,
    Together with life eternal,
    through Thy servant Yah'shua.

§14. The congregation shall then recite together aloud the following prayer under the leadership of the administering Elder:

"Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
To receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength,
And honour, and glory, and blessing,
To Him who sitteth on the throne and to the Lamb
Be praise and honour and glory and power,
    for ever and ever! Amen"

    (Revelation 5:12-13)

§15. The administering Elder shall then say:

    Be mindful of Thy flock, O Master;
    Deliver it from all evil,
    Perfect it in Thy love,
    Sanctify it,
And gather it from the four winds into the Kingdom
Which Thou hast prepared for it.

§16. The assembly shall respond:

    "For Thine is the Kingdom,
    the power and the glory,
    For ever and ever. Amen.

§17. The administering Elder shall then say:

    Let His grace draw near,
And let this present world pass away.

§18. The assembly shall then respond:

"Hosanna to the Elohim of David!

§19. The administering Elder shall then conclude, saying urgently:

    O Master, come quickly!

§20. The assembly shall then conclude with the enthusiastic response:

    Amen! Amen! Amen!

§21. Time for reflection and testimony sharing (optional)

§22. Concluding Song and Prayer.
