Grace and peace to all of you, brethren and sisters, and Shabbat Shalom on this our second Sabbath of the Teshuvah or repentance season.
Repentance a Delight
Yahweh delights in repentance. And He delights in repentance because repentance always leads to good, healthy, upbuilding, positive things. Each Teshuvah season Yahweh lays things heavily upon my heart that He wishes me to address, and indeed does so with all the House of Israel who honour His Name, trust in His Son, and obey His Commandments, because it is by means of repentance, amongst other things, that He builds His Bayit or House - the House of Messianic Israel.
Autumn's Signs
In this part of the world in Scandinavia autumn or fall is clearly in evidence. The weather is colder, the wind blows more often, there has been lots of rain, the leaves are turning into their yellow and red hues, wild animals are leaving for gentler climates and people are slowly but surely making ready for the winter. The firewood is all ready.
In the southern hemisphere, of course - and I think of those of you in particular in Australia, New Zealand, Southern Africa and South America - the opposite is happening even though as Israelites you follow the northern hemisphere's agricultural cycle in your worship patterns for the sake of echad and in obedience to the commandment. And, cf course, those of you nearer the equator, as I once used to be in my childhood, follow a different agricultural pattern altogether.
There have been record levels of rain with extensive flooding in England and this has, apparently, been one of the warmest summers for the last one and a half thousand years, though you might not think so given all the rain we've been having. It's been so warm, in fact, that blue sharks have come to southern British shores and started attacking humans. One good kickback from this, from the horticulturists' point-of-view, has been the growth of gigantic vegatables which have been beating all the records. I saw a picture of a giant cucumber and thought to myself, 'a whole tribe would be needed to eat this!'
New Changes
With change comes both good and evil, blessings and challenges, and big readjustments. And though we may try to escape change, it is always advisable to accept it as a part of Yahweh's providence, understanding that certain things in His - and our - Universe will always remain constant. Yah'shua doesn't change and neither do His laws, His nature or His Priesthood - thank goodness (Heb.7:24; 13:8).
A Revelation for Teshuvah
It has been a busy week with the curtains of heaven parted a great deal for me. A couple of mornings ago I had a dream and a series of experiences which absolutely confirm Yahweh's message to me for all of us in this teshuvah or repentance season.
Dream of the Broken Fence
In the dream I was shown a long wooden fence of the type that is common in England which is used for dividing properties. Sections of the fence had gone rotten and my father had removed all the rotten planks and disposed of them. There were gaping holes in the fence which I knew my father was about to fix. Having seen the damaged fence, I then found myself in a neighbour's house behind that fence. It was not a house in real life so I immediately knew it was symbolic of spiritual realities. It was the house of an old man, fairly bare and dull, but adequate. He was very pleased to see me and was happy.
Repairing Broken Relationships
Upon awakening, the meaning of the dream was plain enough to understand. 'Mending fences', as you know, is an English expression meaning 'repairing broken relationships'. This was the season for restoring damaged relationships between people. There was a second dream but I will share this with you in a minute as first I want to relate confirming experiences so that you will be in no doubt that this is from Yahweh.
Genesis 38
Having recorded my dreams, as is my custom, I opened my Bible randomly at Genesis 38, which I will be studying together with you presently, which is all about building up your brother's or neighbour's 'house', meaning his family. I mention this now only so that you can see the continuity of Yahweh's revelation to our families, confirming the message He wished to give to me.
Dream of the Animal Invasion
After I had had my Bible study, I got up and showered, and then chatted with a member of my family who shared a dream that she had had about the same time as mine. It was about our home, but not the literal house we live in, so I knew that this too was symbolic of spiritual truths. She did not know what I had dreamed about.
In her dream a neighbour's animals had got loose and were swarming into our garden - horses, cows, lots of dogs, lions, bears, leapoards and other beasts. The alarm was raised as all the doors of the house were open and animals were beginning to come in, creating chaos.
The first in were all the dogs, which were harmless enough but a major irritation because they were so noisy. I gave the order to close and secure all the doors and windows but this did not deter the predators like the bears and tigers who began breaking down the doors and gaining access to the house, occupying rooms one by one.
I headed for my rifle past various animals though an attempt was made to stop me by a concerned member of my family who did not want me to get hurt. But having secured it, I handed it over to her, saying that I did not need it after all. In one of the largest rooms, where there were a considerable number of wild beasts of prey, I instead raised what looked like a stick or a sceptre in my hand, and immediately there was this blinding explosion of light like a nuclear bomb going off and spreading in all directions from a central point. The effect of this was to kock out a number of the animals, which lay motionless on the floor, and to drive the remainder away out of the house.
The World is a Neighbour to Messianic Israel
As I listened to the dream I knew exactly what it meant. This was indeed symbolic, the neighbour being the world and his animals representing his carnal spirits or demons whose one desire was to destroy my house because it was, and is, a House of Yahweh. The beasts of prey did not interfere with, threaten, or attack, the domestic animals - the dogs, horses and cows, which they normally would have done - again confirming the spiritual nature of the symbolism, for these represent the apparently 'agreeable' and 'safe' side of the world which is nevertheless in allegiance with the dangerous, murderous side. Remember that in biblical symbolism dogs are unclean, being compared to fools (Prov.26:11) and in other negative terms (e.g. Dt.23:18) like being outside the Holy City (Rev.22:15).
Beware of the 'Nice' Side of the World
Do not be deceived by the 'nice' side of the world and think that it is safe - it seeks to invade and occupy the House of Yahweh no differently from the 'nasty' side even if it does so in less threatening ways.
Satan's Distractions
During this entire dream a conversation was apparently going on between me and a woman in a telephone over loud speakers, someone who I used to spiritually counsel for deliverance but who never saw it through. This was a reminder that Satan will try to distract us and waste out time helping people who do not want to be helped when we should be helping people who do genuinely want to repent and who are genuinely seeking the Kingdom of Heaven, and not those who want deliverance and healing to simply allow them to be more active and hedonistic in the world.
The Witness of Postman Pat
Having listened with fascination to this dream to then interpret it, I went to get my youngest son up. Before I went to his room the Ruach said to me: "Read a story to him", something I never do in the morning. When I got to his room I saw a book lying on his bedside table. I asked him if he would like me to read him a story and he readily agreed. I read through six pages of a Postman Pat book and when I came to the seventh page (the number of completion) and saw the illustration I smiled and quietly praised Yahweh. Have you guessed? Well, maybe not. The text reads:
"Pat was on his way. He saw Ted, mending a fence on the hillside."
And there, in the picture, was Ted mending a damaged fence as Pat drove by in his van with his cat Jess sitting by his side.Well, as you can imagine, I immediately 'knew' and saw the hand of Yahweh. Hallelu-Yah!
Two or Three Witnesses
I hope this will serve as an inspiring introduction to my theme today. Yahweh gave multiple witnesses through three sources, for as it is written:
"By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established" (Matt.18:16, NKJV).
And though a revelation is not invalidated because it only has one human witness, it is of great benefit to the Body of Messiah, and has more impact, where there are two or three. On Yom Chamashee (Thursday) morning I got my two witnesses independently through two members of my family through a dream and in a children's book.
Lest we get too occupied with the testimonial side of this, let us get to the meat of the message which takes me back to Genesis 38. Before I read it to you I want to draw your attention to a problem and its solution.
Wrong Thinking Patterns
The problem, as I have articulated many times and in different ways over the years, is that we are imprisoned by wrong thinking patterns and processes. We have been taught to think and emotionally react in ways that are at odds with the Bible revelation. The efect of this is to create suspicion in, and mistrust of, certain things in the Bible which clash with the world view in which we were raised. This in turn often causes us to back off and try to 'excuse' or 'explain away' the things in Scripture which may make us uncomfortable or even just plain upset us. Typically the reactions we give are: "Oh, that was for then, not now" and "That was the primitive past. Today we are more enlightened and spiritually advanced". You know what I mean. You have heard me say this before.
Cultural Priorities and Emphases
Part of the problem in growing up in non-biblical or semi-biblical cultures is that we tend to have different priorities and lay different emphases on different things. We notice these differences when we go to other cultures and get to know their ways and mannerisms. And we are not always positive, are we? We may scratch our heads at the apparent unfathomlessness of their thinking or their apparent 'hard-heartedness' and end up radicaly misjudging them.
Just listening and reading the propaganda fed to us on the media would lead you to believe that certain races are cold-hearted monsters. But it's not until you really get to know them and gain their trust that you discover that they have brains and hearts little different from our own - they're human after all, made by the same Creator, and endowed with the same capacity for love. Some of their ways turn out to be good, and better than ours, and some bad, and worse.
Getting to know different cultures for the contrast alone is a healthy and needful things because we do need mirrors thrown back up at us and they need mirrors thrown back at them. And though in all such contacts the cross-fertilisation of ideas and sentiments can be both good and evil, it is a necessary way to gain understanding and promote spiritual growth.
The Biblical Culture
I count myself blessed to have been raised in a multi-cultural and multi-religious Asian culture, to have then tasted and known the contrast of first Western and then Eastern European cultures. But by far the most important contasting that we need, and which we are both supposed to learn from and imitate, is the Torah- and Messiah-based culture of the Bible world. This is our manual of faith and the book showing us the lifestyle Yahweh wants us to live. In the Tanakh (Old Testament) and B'rit Chadashah (New Testament) Scriptures we are to get our proper mental and emotional grounding.
Introduction to Genesis 38
The world of Genesis 38 is radically different from our own. To the Western mind it is alien, shocking, primitive and perhaps even disgusting. That is because the Western mind is rooted in self and self-aggrandisement, the neutralisation of the genders, and the replacement of the family by the state. And yet this chapter of the first book of Genesis is rooted in a time when Yahweh's revelation was clearly manifested and under the Melchizedek Priesthood Order which is very similar to the Melchizedek Order of the New Covenant established by Messiah Yah'shua. Their 'Gospel' was, and is, essentially identical to the one preached by Yah'shua and the apostles but it is not one followed by Christendom because it has become paganised.
Judah, His Three Sons and Tamar
I am only going to be looking at the first part of this chapter right now - the second we'll read afterwards.
"It came to pass at that time that Judah departed from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah. And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he married her and went in to her. So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him. Then Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yahweh, and Yahweh killed him. And Judah said to Onan, 'Go in to your brother's wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.' But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he emitted on the ground, lest he should give an heir to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased Yahweh; therefore He killed him also. Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, 'Remain a widow in your father's house till my son Shelah is grown.' For he said, 'Lest he also die as his brothers did.' And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
"Now in the process of time the daughter of Shua, Judah's wife, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. And it was told Tamar, saying, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.' So she took off her widow's garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife" (Gen.38:1-15, NKJV).
Yahweh's Way of the East
My purpose today is not to talk to you about Judah's foolishness - and he was very foolish - or his marrying a pagan wife, or the way his daughter-in-law Tamar played the harlot to put him straight in his failure to see her done right. What I am interested in is a whole way of thinking, feeling and responding which paralyses the Western mind. And I am not even talking about what moderns call a 'primitive custom' in order to dismiss and so distance themselves from it. I am speaking of the Law of Levirate, as it came to be later known when it was written down in the Law by Moses, which is that if a man dies without a male heir, it is the duty of his surviving brother to marry her - either mongamously or polygamously - to raise up an heir for the late brother. I don't even want to get into the subject of marriage practices but rather to turn to the theme which Yahweh gave me in the two dreams I have related to you, namely, the building and preservation of a man's 'House' - not his home (the physical building) but his family. For as must be readily apparent from the passage of Scripture I just read to you, the preservation of a man's House is so important to Yahweh that He executes those men who fail to live up to their responsibilities. This very Eastern concept, so 'strange' to the Western mine, is nevertheless dear to the heart of the One who gave it, Yahweh, and must therefore, by extension and stewardship, become very dear to us.
Western Reactions to the Levirate Law
A Westerner, reading this passage, will have two reactions, depending whether it is a man or woman we are talking about. The man may think: 'Oh great! Another woman, more sex!' The woman may think: 'Oh, how gross, how perverse. The woman is just a tool, never mind about her feelings!' And yet as you read the text it is clear that neither the men nor the women thought in this way because they had different goals or objectives to Westerners. That is why passages like Isaiah 4:1 are so meaningless to Westerners steeped in heathenistic Greco-Roman thinking because they cannot understand why a woman would even want to think this way - so they dismiss it as a 'primitive custom' or, worse, 'brain-washing':
"And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, 'We will eat our own food and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by your name (shemi), to take away our reproach'" (Isa.4:1, NKJV).
A Long Path of Repentance for the Westerner
The reaction of the modern, Western woman might be: "Go get a life! I can manage myself, thank you very much!" And in saying this she reveals how utterly separated she is from the Kingdom of Yahweh. As for Western men, they are not at all interested in getting a "name", which is a Hebraic figure of speeach meaning getting a 'godly standing in Yahweh's eyes' - they would be more than happy to serially seduce seven women, get them pregnant, encourage them have abortions, and then dump them for the next seven. Western men and women live in a different universe to Yahweh's people, modern and ancient. There is a long road of teshuvah or repentance for them in order for them to get alligned with Yahweh's way.
The Centrality of a Man's Bayit
As I said, this is not a sermon about marriage, the law of Levirate or even polygamy which normally follow on from a study of these passages. My message to you is to somehow convey to you, with the Ruach's anointing (since neither I will be able to convey this message, nor you receive or understand this message, without the supernatural activity of the Ruach), the importance of a man's BAYIT 1 or HOUSE.
As you read through the Scriptures you will discover the primacy that both Yahweh Himself and Yahweh's servants give to this concept. You will understand, when this principle is neglected, downgraded or downplayed at the expense of other things, why it makes Yahweh so angry to the point that He will even execute those men who fail to live up to their divine callings! Man has a duty to build and guard his Bayit as a sacred stewardship to Yahweh, and Yahweh in His turn severely punishes the men who fail to do their duty and anyone from outside who tries to interfere with it. And if, having read the Scriptures on this subject, we do not have the same view as Yahweh, and react in the same as Yahweh does when that Bayit is threatened or abused - and we should - why don't we? If we have a totally different or opposite reaction, what demonic system is in the way of our understanding and in the way of the correct emotional response? What sin is it in us that leads us to react in this hostile or negative way, which we must, of necessaity, to in order to be right with Yahweh, repent of?
Patriarchal Barrier-Building
In my dream my father - who represents the patriarchal principle - is repairing (or is about to repair) a damaged fence. The first truth we must understand, teach and emphasise is that Yahweh expects certain barriers to be built, strengthened and maintained between Houses or Families. This principle is so important that in Torah boundary stones between private property are viewed as sacred and those who move them are cursed:
The Sacredness of Private property
On a p'shat or literal level of understanding, Yahweh is telling us that property is sacred because it is a part of a man's - and therefore His family's - Bayit. It is his children's inheritance which Yahweh guards through all generations. That is why Torah goes to great lengths to safeguard it so that, should a man be forced to sell his land in hard times, Yahweh requires that land to be returned unconditionally back to the family in the Year of Jubillee.
Like most principles, there are related connections. If, for instance, a man steals another man's wife and his children, then at the Cosmic Jubillee - when this world is wrapped up - he will be forced to return what he has stolen and pay the price for adultery, which is a swift removal to hell. Any kind of thieving is a moving of boundary stones and an alteration of boundaries:
"Men move boundary stones; they pasture flocks they have stolen" (Job 24:2, NIV)
The boundaries of a man's family are his wife or wives and children and any man who erodes those boundaries by adultery - stealing his wife and children - is cursed. It is an invasion of, and an assault on, his sacred Bayit or House. It is his mini kingdom of which he is the rightful owner and steward under Yahweh. Thus a man is commanded to build a wall or fence around his Bayit, to protect it and build it. That Bayit is set-apart - it is holy - and under divine approbation. Those who try to change the borders of a man's House by trying to steal of destroy his family have an angry Elohim to contend with:
"Judah's leaders are like those who move boundary stones. I will pour out my wrath on them like a flood of water" (Hos.5:10, NIV).
Absalom
We remember Absalom, whom we spoke of last week 2, who moved the 'boundary stones' of the Bayit or House of his father David, seizing of his family members (principally his pilegesh wives) and his kingdom. Yahweh arose in rage against this theft and usurpation and in the end destroyed him, using this terrible situation to refine David even more - it is largely because of Absalom that we have most of the Psalms which generations of believers have benefitted from. And we remember Solomon who abused his own family and nation, reaping the inevitable:
Moving Boundary Stones
The sin of Judah's leaders was apostacy - they moved the boundary stones of Torah to include their own man-made laws, which at length replaced much of Torah, and led the people into sin. Yahweh's wrath fell upon them, and is still upon their descendants who still refuse to receive Messiah. So, too, do the men of this world, like Ahab: they reject Yahweh or just pay lip-service to Him, raising up families out of divine grace and exposed to the destructive forces of the world. Women do the same too, troubling their husbands and children, rejecting Yahweh, or just paying lip-servive to Him, like Jezebel. Both move the boundary stones of the Eternal Law, the men inventing their own, and the women seeking to be rulers of the men. Are we surprised that the curses of heaven fall to heavily upon them? Are we surprised that Satan troubles them so much? Are we surprised that the traditional biblical family is in decline and (at least in the West) almost extinct? We are not.
Yahweh demands that there are lines, boundaries and fences between properties and houses so that there is no mixing of them. We would therefore expect Satan to want the opposite of Yahweh and to seek to establish his anti-order in the world. This, indeed, we find.
Anciently there were no 'apartments' or 'flats' - it was Yahweh's will that every man have his own plot of land with his own house and his own tree(s) for his own family. And families were supposed to cluster together in clans and remain in their tribal territories. Satan scatters and spreads apart.
This is the way it is to be even in the Millennium - there will be no apartments or flats then! You only have to look at modern cities and towns, orginally established by the antichrist Nimrod 3, with their apartment blocks to see a system that is opposite to Yahweh's. This is not how it is to be. Not only our our physical houses to be separate but so also are our Families. No kibbutzes or mixing of families, buy separate homes clustered near one another.
Satan wishes to tear the walls down between families, destroy the husband's and father's authority and eradicate the sexual barriers of marriage. He wants everything mixed up. So sacred is this Hebrew concept of the Bayit that it is the set-apart responsibility of a man to marry his late brother's wife - whether he is married or not - if that late brother had no son to continue the late brother's Name and therefore his Bayit or House because a man who is not fruitful is a dead man in Yahweh's eyes. That is part of the meaning of the Parable of the Talents (Mt.25:14-30). And the woman's calling and rôle is to assist him in that task of establishing and multipying his Bayit - it is not to build her own!
How different all of this is from the Western man's goal to get as much recreational sex and money as he can even if it means destroying his own seed through the murderous practice of abortion. And how different is this from the Amazonian spirit of modern Western woman who wants ti try and 'go it alone',having her own career, using the man for recreational sex and then dumping him in search of someone 'better', just like he does. And, of course, I am not attacking the genders here, whose natural Yahweh-driven impulse is Bayit-building, but the selfish demonic distortions we have been fed and have embraced.
Physical Seed
Obviously fruitfulness does not just concern the raising of children and propagating the name of the father, yet this is of prime importance. And in saying this I do not wish to try and guilt women who are unable to have children of their own through no fault of their own. There are many ways to share in the blessings of a man's Bayit because no matter whether there are four women in a family like Jacob's, with children from all, or an infertile woman with adoped children, she can still be House-building.
Spiritual Seed
This House, moreover, does not just include physical seed, but spiritual seed as well. Looking at this from a New Covenant perspective, which adds to and expands the horizons of the Old, what we are talking about is Kingdom-building not just on the familiar but on the national, Israelite level as well. Putting the Law of Levirate in a New Covenant context (and by this I do not mean 'replacing' this with a New Covenant understanding but 'filling up' or 'completing' it), if one man is witnessing to an unbeliever, and fails to impregnate him with the truth, and that Israelite is taken out of the life of that unbeliever through death, relocation, apostacy, or whatever, and then it becomes the responsibility of his brother to complete the job that he did not - or was not able to - finish.
Apostacy's Reward
I mention 'apostacy' here for two reasons. Firstly, as we see from Genesis 38, Judah's first two sons through the Canaanite woman were wicked - they did evil in Yahweh's sight, so Yahweh killed them. (That in itself upsets the 'fragile', lawless minds of many Westerners). They were wicked for different reasons, one supposes, though we are not told what Er's wickedness was. Onan, whose sin was not so-called 'onanism' 4 but refusing to make his late brother's wife fruitful while she was still fertile, was refusing giving the offspring to their late father by giving that offspring their father's name. 5 What was his main sin? He would have inherited the wealth (if their father was dead) of his late (dead) elder brother which he would have inherited as the firstborn with the responsibility of take care of the material needs of the family as head of his father's Bayit or House. Presumably Onan did not want to foot the bill for feeding yet another mouth especially as the boy would not have his name. I suspect that his chief interest was economic.
A Shem: Self-Generated or from Yahweh?
Many believers refuse to serve Yahweh unless they can get the glory for increase in the Kingdom. There are many ministers in the ministry just for the prestige and wealth. They want their own name rather than Yahweh's. This does not mean that a righteous man should not have a name but that he should not consciously seek it in order to bring conscious glory to himself, but ONLY to Yahweh. Clearly righteous men by default have a shem or a good name, which is why those seven women of Isaiah 4:1 sought it because they know how important that good name was in Yahweh's eyes and that it would remove their reproach.
The Samaritan Woman and the Number 6
Contrast this with the messed-up life of the Samaritan woman who had five husbands and a lover, who was in desparate need of a Redeemer in Yah'shua and who, finally, found and embraced His Truth (Jn.4:1ff). She was having one man after the other, meeting Yah'shua at her sixth attempt, 6 being the number of man, nnlike 7 which represents divine perfection. When you attempt to attain perfection through a wrong path, as the Samaritan woman did, belonging to a community with a counterfeit 'Jerusalem' and temple, then it divine providence to stop you before you hit '7' and ripen in iniquity. Yah'shua caught her at '6', representing the false way. She had been a part of sex houses or bayit and yet was part of none because they were not a part of Yahweh's system. The Samaritan woman represents a compromised faith or truth, one mixed with error, a rival system to Jerusalem and to Yahweh, and though the Samaritans have survived to our day, they have progressively dwindled in numbers so that there are only about 700 of them today.
The Goal of the Seven Women of Isaiah 4:1
Many commentators wrongly suppose that what the seven women of Isaiah 4:1 wanted was food, clothing and shelter. But what they themselves say disproves that because they insist that, if necessary, they will provide this for themselves, presumably meaning they had the means. This is not to say that this is what wives should do - the husband has the responsibility to provide for them, even if they may, like the woman of Proverbs 31, be making their own contributions. No, what they are after before physical well-being, sex, children, shelter, a home, food, physical well-being or anything visible to the carnal senses is THE BLESSEDNESS OF THE GOOD NAME OR SHEM OF A RIGHTEOUS MAN WHO CAN GIVE THEM SPIRITUAL COVERING AND A GODLY HEART IN WHICH TO LIVE.
The World's Blindness
This does not compute in the Western woman's head because she has become so divorced from Yahweh's truth. They view such women with contempt or as victims of a system of male brainwashing and control. Yet we must understand this mindset. Without it, much of Yahweh's Plan of Salvation will remain a frustrating and incomprehensible mystery, and our attempts to 'explain it away' will simply push us out into even greater darkness.
The Desperation of Tamar
Tamar did something that no Western woman would ever do. Why do you suppose Tamar was led to her desperate act? After the deaths of Er and Onan, Judah had a third son called Shelah and she was waiting to be given to him to raise up seed to her late husband Er even though he had been a wicked man. What is she thinking? Is she insane? Why would she wish to raise seed up to a dead reprobate husband? The Western woman's mind boggles, doesn't it? The Western woman says: 'Get a life, baby! You deserve better than these creeps! Go do your own thing! Go and live life!'
And, O, how 'noble'-sounding that seems, echoing as it does the political correctness of feminism, but it is perverse in Yahweh's eyes. This woman Tamar had a righteous heart because she knew and understood what Yahweh's holiness and righteousness was, and her part in it. True, she went about doing 'right' in the wrong way by seducing her father-in-law Judah (who was clearly a reporobate himself in so many ways). Let is see what she was driven to in the second half of this story:
"When Judah saw [Tamar], he thought she was a harlot, because she had covered her face. 16 Then he turned to her by the way, and said, 'Please let me come in to you'; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. So she said, 'What will you give me, that you may come in to me?' And he said, 'I will send you a young goat from the flock.' So she said, 'Will you give me a pledge till you send it?' Then he said, 'What pledge shall I give you?' So she said, 'Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.' Then he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. So she arose and went away, and laid aside her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood. And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but he did not find her. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, 'Where is the harlot who was openly by the roadside?' And they said, 'There was no harlot in this place.' And he returned to Judah and said, 'I cannot find her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot in this place. Then Judah said, 'Let her take them for herself, lest we be shamed; for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.'
"And it came to pass, about three months after, that Judah was told, saying, 'Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore she is with child by harlotry.' So Judah said, 'Bring her out and let her be burned!' When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, 'By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.' And she said, 'Please determine whose these are -- the signet and cord, and staff.' So Judah acknowledged them and said, 'She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.' And he never knew her again.
"Now it came to pass, at the time for giving birth, that behold, twins were in her womb. And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, 'This one came out first.' Then it happened, as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out unexpectedly; and she said, 'How did you break through? This breach be upon you!' Therefore his name was called Perez. Afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah" (Gen.38:15-30, NKJV).
Judah's Character Traits
There is much that could be said about the Tribe of Judah historically from this account from the character traits of their forefathert, and we could contrast that with the record of Joseph, but we do not have time for that today. This is indeed a mixed tale and Judah rightly understood that Tamar was more righteous than him. Not only that, but I venture to say, that because of Tamar's faithfulness to the unwritten Levirate Law, and Judah's understanding of his sin, these two were, in many respects, more conscious of the truth and righteous in respect of that truth, respectively, than your modern male and female believer because they understood the paramount important of building and maintaining a Bayit to Yahweh.
The Necessity of Fences Between People
These are doubtless alien, and perhaps even frightening, thoughts to some of you because you are focused not on the divine concept of a Bayit but on individuals like Judah, Ramar, Er and Onan. But without these truths there can be no proper restoration of Messianic Israel, no proper focus, and no full anointing of the Ruach haQodesh. This requires nothing short of a complete reorientation of thinking, to undo the brainwashing of our promiscuous and devilish culture that seeks to rips down every fence that Yahweh has errected for the protection of families and the prosperity of the nation. Fences between people are necessary otherwise what you end up with is nothing less than adultery. That is why believers are forced into being Tamar's today because the men - the leaders - will not obey Yahweh's law. And I am not talking sex here but spiritual principles.
The High Priestly Prayer
But doesn't the concept of fences existing between people clash with Yah'shua's High Priestly Prayer where He prays that everyone should be one, even as He is none with the Father? (Jn.17) No, because this oneness is echad - a compound unity of different individuals and marriage, family, clan and tribal units, each within different spheres. There is to be the Ruach inter-penetrating spiritual love without boundaries between all of Yahweh's true sons and daughters, but there are to be doundaries - very firm and thick boundaries - in the spheres of family authority, sexuality, ministry, and so on. There is, in the divine system, no walls in one areas but fortress walls in others!
Yahweh wants individuals, families, clans, tribes and nations which, as separate units, learn how to unite in agapé love as echad. Satan wants all these to disappear and for one homogenous New World Order mass.
The Analogy of the Human Body
Think of the human body with organelles, cells, tissues, and organs all cooperatively functioning as an echad whole. Satan's equivalent is one giant cell like a bacterium or, preferably, from his point-of-view, a parasitic virus. Every cell membrane, every enclosing wall for an organ (like the percardial cavity around the heart) or the rib cage around the lungs, are biological fences like the spiritual boundaries and the property boundaries we have been talking about. You can see this principle throughout the cosmos even if the 'fences' are not all visible. One of the most pernicious heresies in some Messianic quarters is the doctrine that Yahweh is completely yachid or singular because it destroys the divine pattern throughout the whole of creation and actually - ultimately - agrees with the satanic model. 6
The Quest of the True Woman
The true wife - the true believer - wants to find security, rest and peace in a true Bayit or House for which she was made, but modern husbands and churches/assemblies are not providing this. So what choice does she have but to get the protection she needs by any means possible, including deception and seduction? Every Bayit or House is to be distinct but living with good neighbourly relations with every other house (family) in Messianic Israel and with the House of ones pagan neighbour too.
Three Modern Realities
We need to deal with some realities here:
- 2. Second, we live in the world system and we have unbelieving neighbours with whom we must interact - with whom Yahweh wants us to constructively and non-compromisingly (as far as Torah obedience is concerned) interact in order to be a light to them (Mt.5:14).
- 3. Third, if we are not going to be invaded by the demonic powers of our worldly neighbours, as was shown in the second dream I shared with you, we must have the proper fences up even if they do not.
Property Fences
In England where I spent a portion of my life the fence on the left side of your property is your responsibility to maintain and the fence on the right is the responsbility of the other neighbour if you live in a row of plots and houses. In my dream it was the left fence so it was my responsibility to maintain it. Left represents the world and the unsaved and the right represents Messianic Israel and the saved. So the fence to my right would have been, symbolically, my Messianic Israelite 'neighbour'.
Fences Against the World
Both fences are the same - the Torah hedge of protection - but the unbeliever will always want to unconsciously (and sometimes consciously) dismantle the fence so that his demonic powers can invade and overwhelm you. His 'intent' is not to necessarily do evil to you because he is usually blind to these things so you have to be on the alert - continuously. It is the reckless believer who does not have guards up. That is one reason why men are important for their women because they provide this protection by the women being spiritually positioned in their hearts under his covering, united in his calling and purposes in Yahweh. And a man with a good shem is therefore particularly desirable.
Different Walls and Fences
And we must not confuse the different types of fences that there are. Some, like the wall between Jew and Gentile, Yahweh has ripped down through the blood of Yah'shua (Eph.2:14). It's gone. Everybody is elligible to be a member of Messianic Israel on the same terms and must use the same name - Israel - respect one another's names/houses or bayit's, and worship the same Name, Yahweh. This wall-removal does not mean the removal of the protective Torah fences between believers and unbelievers - I have seen many foolish believers remove them, in a gesture supposedly to show friendship, and get overwhelmed - sucked up completely into the world system, even those who were previously strong, spiritual ones, and especially women. And it doesn't mean the removal of the protective Torah fences between believers and their families whose purpose is to strictly and clear delineate where sexual activity is permitted and where individuals Houses begin and end.
Your Choice to Walk in Echad in Yah'shua
This Teshuvah Yahweh wants us to focus on mending fences by mending broken relationships. Relationhips are, for sure, a lot harder to work on than, for example, getting Bible knowledge or just listening to a preacher like myself speak to you every Sabbath. My job is to instruct, prick consciences, and initiate and sustain moves towards congregational echad. In that respect I am a kind of 'husband' and 'father' to the fellowship. One of the hardest jobs of a minister is moving people of diverse personalities, with all sorts of spiritual issues, towards echad. Many wrongly suppose that everyone must be perfect, and have all their issues resolved, before there can be any sort of echad. That, however, would only ever be true if we were trying to save ourselves by moving exclusively in our own will-power. So many believers, sadly, end up in such fleshy modes of thought. Paul reminds us, though, of a different reality:
"There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are IN Messiah Yah'shua, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Ruach" (Rom.8:1, NKJV).
The Supernatural Way
Each and every one of us has a single choice - to walk IN Yah'shua or to walk in self-will. The man or woman who walks IN Yah'shua is in what condition relative to Yahweh? He is under NO condemnation! Why? Because, by an act of will - a choice - he is walking in the Ruach haQodesh. Whoever you are, wherever you are, young or old, mature or immature, experienced or inexperienced, you have a choice to be in a condition of not being under condemnation. You may have issues, yes, but so long as you are walking IN Him, you are in right relationship with Yah'shua. This is also true of the relationships you have with fellow believers. Everbody has issues to resolve, and these issues may be around for a long time, but that is not the point - the point is, Yah'shua has enabled us to walk in a condition of echad unity with everyone who has been born again provided we choose to be guided and sustained by the Ruach and not the flesh. THIS IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO UNBELIEVERS AND TO NOMINAL BELIEVERS because it is a supernational condition that is of Elohim's initiation and realisation, not man's. Our only choice is to say 'yes' or 'no' to walking in this condition.
Taking Away Our Reproach
Unity and love are a function of being in Yah'shua, not of everyone else having their issues resolved. That is not to offer those with issues an excuse not to resolve their issues but it is to point out that human methods and expectations don't work. We are not to wait for others to be fixed before we can be enabled to love them as Yah'shua loves us. We must presume that the seven women in Isaiah 4:1, who are a type of the Messianic Bride and therefore the Messianic Community, had their issues, like all humans of either gender. They were not, however, concerned about their respective problems (which beyond doubt existed), but in first of all getting the shem or 'good name' of the husband they mutually lacked, who is a type of Messiah. They felt condemned - reproached - without a husband just as we are 'condemned' and 'reproached' without Yah'shua! Do you see? Their eyes were not on each other's problems but on the One with the Shem - haShem, Yahweh-Elohim. Echad and free-flowing love come from having your eyes on, and hearts in, the Right Person.
The Interior Decorators
Two mornings ago I had another dream which I haven't told you about yet, but said I would, and yesterday morning I had another dream, both of which were about house-decoration. So to end I'd like to tell you about these.
In the first there were two painters who had been painting the inside of the doors of the house white, though it was - again - not my literal house but symbolic of my Bayit. (You will remember that in the first dream the wild animals had broken the doors down, so I presume they were now repaired). In the second dream I had yesterday I was in the living room where decorators were also present but they were waiting for me to do something that they couldn't, or weren't allowed, to do. At the top of one of the high walls, in one corner, were three small placards or notices next to the ceiling, the content of which I now no longer remember. I ascended a tall ladder and peeled them off the wall, revealing the old and dirty paintwork that would have to be cleaned and painted over. Yahweh was showing me, one supposes, three sin areas in the corner of my life that needed dealing with in order to make that room in my own Bayit completely clean.
Conclusion
Today's message to you has been about godly fences and right-focusing. I am asking those of you who have damaged fences to get them fixed - fast - and those of you who have none to get them built up - fast. I am asking those of you who have hopped over fences into lawlessness and sin, no matter whether you are near the fence or whether you have wandered far beyond it, to get back inside the protection of Torah in Messiah - and fast - because outside there are only curses and destruction. If you have let the world into your souls or homes, then let the heads of families exercise their authority in Messiah and get those homes cleaned out, and let the individual members of those families examine themselves carefully, make such repentances and life adjustments as Yahweh may call upon them to do - quickly. Let every individual get back IN Messiah Yah'shua and out of the will of the flesh.
Let us therefore be faithful in our own Yahweh-appointed household as Moses was in his so that we may be faithful in Yah'shua's as a community of householders:
"Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Messiah Yah'shua, who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house (bayit). For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house (bayit) has more honor than the house (bayit). For every house (bayit) is built by someone, but He who built all things is Elohim. And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house (bayit) as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, but Messiah as a Son over His own house (bayit), whose house (bayit) we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end" (Heb.3:1-6, NKJV).
Amen.
