Shavu'ot 2007
Becoming a Son of Commandment
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
Throughout history and in practically every culture world-wide, initiation ceremonies exist to mark the time when a male makes the transition from boyhood to adulthood with all its attendant responsibilities. This usually occurs between the ages of 12 and 14. In traditional as well as Messianic Judaism, this rite of passage takes place at the age of 13 and is known as Bar Mitzvah, meaning 'son of the commandment'. Although this tradition is not specifically mentioned in the Bible and is of relatively modern provenance, it has nevertheless arisen out of the need to answer some important questions, and in particular at what age should certain of the commandments take effect for, and become binding on, believers. We read in the Torah:
"Yahweh said to Moses, 'Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels (tzitzit) on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of Yahweh, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. Then you will remember to obey all My commands and will be consecrated to your Elohim. I am Yahweh your Elohim, who brought you out of Egypt to be your Elohim. I am Yahweh your Elohim''" (Num.15:37-41, NIV).
Now obviously a small child cannot obey the mitzvot or commandments, yet alone understand them, and so the question arises: at what point is a boy old enough to be responsible to obey Yahweh's the Torah? Which is another way of asking: at what age is a boy mature enough to be a confirmed, covenanted member of the Community, as represented by Shavu'ot? At what age can he be held strictly accountable in the Messianic Israelite community in guarding, upholding and living the Ten Commandments? The Jews say 13 years old. In MLT we believe it should be 12, and these are the reasons.
As we saw yesterday, Shavu'ot is the atseret or conclusion of the Passover season, which is characterised by the reception of the National Covenant through a wedding ceremony, the Ten Commandments being the ketubah or marriage contract. And you will remember that when He was 12 years old, the Gospel of Luke mentions an incident at Pesach:
"Every year [Yah'shua's] parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover (Pesach). When He was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. After the Feast was over, while His parents were returning home, the boy Yah'shua stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking He was in their company, they travelled on for a day. Then they began looking for Him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find Him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for Him. After three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His understanding and His answers. When his parents saw Him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, 'Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.' 'Why were you searching for Me?' He asked. 'Didn't you know I had to be in My Father's house?" (Luke 2:41-50, NIV).
The Bible is mysteriously silent about Yah'shua's boyhood and then, suddenly, when He is twelve, this incident is mentioned. Why? It is, we believe, because at this time He attained to manhood and was seen to be operating as a man by making His company with the learned Elders of Israel in discussion with them on the Torah! And this was during the Pesach season, at the first of the three compulsory attendance moedim, two of which - Pesach and Shavu'ot - are a part of the same season. It is therefore at this time - when a boy turns twelve during Shavu'ot - that he is 'confirmed' a young member of the community of Israel's men. Interestingly, the non- and Messianic Jews consider their girls to come of age when they are 12 years old, not 13, the theory being that they mature earlier than boys. The tradition of Bat Mitzvah for girls is even more modern than the Bar Mitzvah tradition for boys and only began 200 years ago in Italy, France and Germany.
It is our practice to induct boys and girls, who have already chosen of their own free will to enter baptismal covenants (usually when they are 8 years old or older) into manhood and womanhood, respectively, at Shavu'ot when they are 12 years of age. At this time the boys receive their tassels or tzitzit and the girls receive their head coverings from their fathers to indicate their respective responsibilities. They also receive a blessing from their fathers which includes admonishments to be obedient to Yahweh's Law and to their heads. It is thereafter the duty of fathers to instruct their sons, and mothers their daughters, to be in proper submission to their heads, as Yahweh expects, and to live up to the commandments of El Elyon. This is what we are here to celebrate on this Yom Shavu'ot. We are here also to encourage them to imitate Yah'shua the youth who demonstrated that He was conversant in the Bible. If a boy has been trained right by his father, he should already know his Bible quite well, at least in the basic essentials of the faith. If the father doesn't feel the boy is ready for his Bar Mitzvah, or if the boy himself wishes to delay, then this is respected. Since the Bible makes no hard and fast rule, neither do we. That goes for baptism at 8 years old too.
How, then, should we measure a boy's or girl's readiness to receive Bar or Bat Mitzvah? It is our belief that if their heart is in the Shema as spoken by Yah'shua, that they are ready. Let's recount that incident:
"One of the teachers of the law (Torah) came and heard them debating. Noticing that Yah'shua had given them a good answer, he asked Him, 'Of all the commandments, which is the most important?' 'The most important one,' answered Yah'shua, 'is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Yahweh our Elohim, Yahweh is echad (one). Love Yahweh your Elohim with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these'. 'Well said, teacher,' the man replied. 'You are right in saying that Elohim is echad (one) and there is no other but Him. To love Him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.' When Yah'shua saw that he had answered wisely, He said to him, 'You are not far from the kingdom of Elohim'" (Mark 12:28-34, NIV).
As we look at the heart of a 12 year boy we should be looking at the heart of Torah, and this is it: To love Yahweh with everything you have, and to love your neighbour like you love yourself - in acceptance just as Yahweh accepts you. If a boy builds on this foundation, and is reminded of this foundation whenever he looks at his tzitzit, then that foundation for life will be the best known there is in the whole universe: in the love that inspired the written Torah in the first place. And he will measure all his relationships, and build all his relationships, on this solid foundation in Yah'shua his Messiah.
I would like us to especially remember Shavu'ot this year in this way. It is our very first Bar Mitzvah, very different from the traditional forms of the Jews but, I believe, simple and profound enough to make this a lasting tradition worthy of upholding. At least this is what I shall be doing in my family from now on. Today, in a few minutes, the first of my sons will be passing through this initiation into manhood, and I hope all the others will follow in due season. I pray that he will grow up and learn to be a good, loving and obedient man in Messiah, and better than his father. With this prayer in my heart, I present him with his tzitzit with an admonishment to proudly wear them all the days of his wakeful life, as he is able, and fulfil the first of the 613 mitzvot as a 'son of commandment' and a son of Yahweh, our Heavenly Father. May his and all of us assembled here today, and those partaking of this from afar off, have a blessed Shavu'ot as we mediate of the beginnings of Torah, both historically and in terms of the Shema. Shabbat Shalom!
(Blessing is administered)
