Standing Firm
Until All is Pure and Perfect
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
Shabbat shalom and welcome back to this assembly. As you all know, I have been taking a much needed sabbatical from the ministry to look at myself, the message I have been preaching all these years, giving much needed time to home life, and resting up by focussing on other things. Ministers rarely get vacations, and whilst I have not exactly been on a holiday these past few weeks, I have at least been able to give much needed time to other pressing matters in my life. Though I am still 'on vacation', as it were, I did want to quickly poke my head in around the door and share some things which Yahweh has been pressing on my mind and heart.
The last time I had a 'general review' was about ten years ago. At that time I sat down, and took a long hard look at all the criticisms that had been made against the ministry and leadership both from within the Assembly and outside it. I basically set everything aside and tried to read the Scriptures fresh as though for the first time. And although the circumstances today are very different from ten years ago, as they have been each time I have made such a review, this has been a time of discovery - both pleasant and painful - for me. The current 'review' is by no means over and I shall be 'disappearing' again for a while to resume a review of both what I have been teaching over the last ten years, my relationship with Yahweh and my relationships with others. I have found defects that need rectifying in myself that have a bearing not so much on the doctrinal content of what I have been teaching but on the emphasis laid on different aspects of the Gospel. Since 1999 we have been very absorbed in restoring the Hebraic roots to the revelation Yahweh has given us - it has been a time to look closely at Torah and to follow after it. And whilst that will continue, we are now reaching back to the simple Rishon aspects of the faith which, for want of a better term, I am going to call the 'evangelical imperative' or the basic salvation message.
Back in 1995, when I was going through my last 'review', Yahweh told us how He works through the soul revealing Himself a little at a time. Though this revelation is specifically addressed to those operating in the prophetic office it can in principle be applied to every disciple in his or her search for an ongoing and deepening relationship with the Creator, and so I quote it now with that in mind:
"Line upon line, precept upon precept, gave I, Yahweh, light and truth ... showing ... first from this angle, and then that, that he might behold the whole. As the earth turns upon her axis, so must also the [people] turn upon theirs, first beholding the gaze of the noonday sun, and then the fullness of the night. And by the by, after many illuminations and periods of darkness, so I, Yahweh, bring to pass understanding and kindle desires to be in the light continually. I bring darkness to pass that the searcher after light might long for the light with all his heart, and I give him light that he might rejoice in it. You have been led through this process as individuals and as a Community, and it will be so with all those who come into the New Covenant. They shall turn upon the axis of life, first bathing in light and then be left to endure the night of darkness, and all this for their perfection. Blessed are those who doubt not that the sun will rise again when they are in times of darkness, for their faith is being tested to see if they will be obedient in both good and bad times. When a soul dies is passes into a dimension where there is no sun, for the Son of Man, even Yah'shua the Messiah the Master, is their inner sun" (OB 370:61-69).
The revelation goes on to explain that the sun is a symbol of the "New and Everlasting Covenant, even the fullness, after the Second Coming of Messiah" (v.28), in other words, the Sukkot anointing, whereas "the earth is the New Covenant, after the First Coming of Messiah" (v.79), or in other words, after the Shavu'ot or Pentecost anointing. Finally, the moon, which shines by a far dimmer reflected light than the earth, "is the Old Covenant, even a shadow of things" (v.80). "The moon illuminates the earth by night, and the sun by day. Blessed are you if you understand these things; nevertheless, only those who are in the sun shall understand them" (vv.80-82).
I have discovered, over the past five weeks or so, that we are still forging our way out of the earthy Shavu'ot endowment and heading for the Sukkot one. Things always take longer than we think, and the struggle is always harder than we desire. Old idols and habits still stand in the way. This transition time from the New to the New and Everlasting Jeremiah foresaw when he said:
"'In those days, at that time,' declares Yahweh, 'the people of Israel and the people of Judah together will go in tears to seek Yahweh their Elohim. They will ask the way to Zion and turn their faces toward it. They will come and bind themselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten" (Jer.50:4-5, NIV).
This is a two-house prophecy and it is telling us how the two houses of Israel and Judah finally come to the end of themselves and tearfully seek Yahweh together as one. They will ask the Way back to Zion and resolutely head toward it. Look at the focus - it is Yahweh and Zion! And once they have got their focus right, what will they next do? They will bind themselves with an unforgettable covenant which is everlasting. And what is everlasting cannot be broken - an everlasting covenant is unbreakable. The Old Covenant was breakable, and indeed Israel broke it, and Yahweh divorced them, and could not remarry Israel and Judah until, according to the requirements of Torah, He died as the Redeemer of the World. Now each member of Israel and Judah must come back individually to Him. Likewise we cannot enter into that everlasting glory until we too have died and become divorced from our old lives and received the new one which never ends, the one Yah'shua seeks to give to us.
Jeremiah's revelation follows after a life of terrible ordeals for that man of Elohim. You will remember that Yahweh sent him as a prophet to a people who not only rejected Yahweh but who horribly abused him too. He bitterly complained about his seemingly futile mission and yet, as he himself testified, he could not withhold the voice of Yahweh because it burned so strongly within him. He had terrible times of doubting. He bitterly protested to Yahweh but like Job was finally silenced. What keeps him going? The fire of the Word in his bones and the promises that Yahweh gave him: he sees that Israel and Judah will come home and never turn away again! But only after the night of darkness has humbled them, and given them a broken heart and a contrite spirit (Ps.51:17). He recounts what they had to go through to bring them to their full repentance:
"'My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have led them astray and caused them to roam on the mountains. They wandered over mountain and hill and forgot their own resting place. Whoever found them devoured them; their enemies said, 'We are not guilty, for they sinned against Yahweh, their true pasture, Yahweh, the hope of their fathers'" (Jer.50:6-7, NIV).
And yet it was not always so. Yahweh fondly remembered the early days:
"'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. Israel was holy to Yahweh, the firstfruits (bikkurim) of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' declares Yahweh" (Jer.2:2-3, NIV).
Why the long journey from this blissful beginning, through the gall of bitterness, and finally to a joyful return? Dawson Trotman rightly suggests that "discipline imposed from the outside eventually defeats when it is not matched by a desire from within". Through one of my own struggles in the dark, Yahweh had to forcibly remind me of the contents of Isaiah 58 as I pleaded with Him to show me why I could not advance any further from where I was inside.
In Isaiah's days the people continued their outer religion but it was not of the heart. In one example, Yahweh comments on their fasting and accuses them of only "fasting for strife and debate and to smite with the fist of wickedness". And He says: "Fasting as you do today will not cause your voice to be heard on high" (Is.58:4, AmpV). He reminds them what fasting is for: it is "a day for a man to humble himself with soul-sorrow". And He asks them: "[Is true fasting merely mechanical?] Is it only to bow his head like a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him [to indicate a condition of heart that he does not have]? Will you call this a fast and an acceptable day to Yahweh?" (v.5, AmpV). And whilst Yahweh is not telling us to stop our outward observance - for He goes on in the same chapter to rebuke the people for not properly observing the Sabbath (v.13-14) - people often make the mistake of believing that if their hearts are wrong they should cease the outer observances too.
No. The outer observances have a purpose because we are outer people too and need the structure while our hearts are being prepared. You can't divide the inner from the outer. Yahweh views us as a single being of inner and outer as echad or one. Rather, what He wants ultimately, is for the outer to flow from the true heart because that is true harmony. It is the Roman Catholics who have traditionally whipped themselves and deprived themselves physically in order to 'get the heart right' but Yahweh does not want that. If we want to afflict ourselves, then He has given fasting as the method - but there again, the motive must be right for it to have an impact in heaven. He has given us fasting "to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke" (v.6) and then spells out what this means practically in terms of feeding the hungry, giving shelter to the homeless, clothing the naked, and so forth, as Yah'shua reaffirmed in the Gospels (v.7; cp. Mt.25:31ff). And finally, which Yah'shua reminded the Pharisees of, "[do] not hide yourself from the needs of your own flesh and blood" (v.7b) - your own family.
This chapter has especially convicted me of my sins as I have reviewed the last few months and years in what has been a very trying time for the whole of my family and for our brethren and sisters in this work. At a time of feeling very down and helpless, this prophecy of Isaiah spoke very clearly and powerfully to me. As I looked back over what I have taught and experienced, questioning if I had taken a wrong turn in the ministry, questioning my doctrinal accuracy, questioning my interpretation and exegesis, questioning the many spiritual experiences I have had Yahweh kept telling me: "No. In these things I have led you. I have given you My Word. The problem is with YOU, not what I have shown you".
How easy it is to fault Yahweh and excuse ourselves by saying that we 'got it all wrong' when the real problem was - and always is - ourselves: our attitudes, heart-dispositions, behaviours and the way we treat others. Again, the outer is not unimportant, because it provides a vital structure or vessel for the inner life, as Yahweh told me 12 years ago in the same section of the Olive Branch. He even prophesied that we would be grafted back into Messianic Israel and were in the process as we sought the old paths which Protestantism had taught us to abandon:
"I have taken the New Covenant (MLT's precursor) branch and grafted it into Israel and shaken off the bad fruits, and I shall continue to shake until all is pure and perfect" (OB 370:105).
Oh yes, I can testify of that! And oh yes, I can testify that that shaking is not pleasant! It causes a wailing and lamentation to rise up from those parts of our heart we thought we could keep concealed from Him and from each other! And what were those parts? Rebellion, unbelief, selfish ambition, independence, self-justification, self-protection, sin, and all that would draw us away from the Messiah and from each other. We cringe, don't we, every time we are asked to yield some more sovereignty, and we see for the first time just what our original covenants actually meant. Those words we use so glibly in our description of our relationship to Yah'shua - "Lord and Saviour" or "Master and Deliverer" - then begin to be seen in the light of the true condition of our hearts. And more often than not - if we are honest and truly repenting - we are appalled at ourselves ... or continue hiding, trying to convince ourselves that we are more holy and sanctified than we really are. We have a way to go yet. I know I do. Things that frighten us - and they can be things unique to us individually or common to all men and women everywhere - have to be faced. And yes, I know, we do turn and hide, We do turn and run. I have taken numerous backward steps when I thought I had got things together. And while we hate these testing times, they are necessary and they do prove fruitful I we yield to them, even if Yahweh's demands make us recoil in our flesh. Continuing in the same Olive Branch revelation:
"Walk in My truth, which is my order, and I will teach you My ways, says Yahweh. Give to Me your undivided hearts, properly ordered, with children subjected to their parents, with wives subjected to their husbands ... and My love shall pour into you, bursting out, filling your souls with gladness and praise. And behold [you] will declare: 'It is good to know Yahweh, and to worship the Most High; we proclaim Your love in the morning, and Your faithfulness at night" (OB 370:157-151; cp.Ps.42:2)
There is a good chance that while we are going through the night of repentance that words like these will not be welcome, especially when those in the chain of that order are floundering. At such times the heart is not too concerned with orders or structures but about keeping its head above water. Jeremiah certainly felt that way. And yet, as C.S.Lewis wrote, if we keep at it and don't give up, "the door on which we have been knocking all our lives will open at last". It just depends whether we stop knocking or not, which reminds me of another experience recorded in the Olive Branch which serves as a warning not to give up. This was the dream of a former leader in the old organisation as he recounted it to me:
"I found myself at a place which seemed to be an airport and was talking to a woman who was dressed very beautifully as though for a special occasion. The dream changed and I saw the same woman in ordinary clothes talking to some of her friends. When I asked why she was not so nicely dressed anymore she said that she had been waiting for her bridegroom but that he never came, so she had changed back into ordinary clothes" (OB 381)
What this dream was prophesying to him was that he would not stay the course but return to the world. The fine clothes of the woman represented his covenants - his Ruach covering - which he exchanged for his former lifestyle when his expectations were not met. A lot of believers do that, sadly. Not many return. There aren't many who refuse to surrender to the world.
When the temptation to quit comes - and it does, for Yahweh stretches and stretches us, asking us to bend ourselves towards Him and accept where He wants to take us - we have to remind ourselves of Yah'shua's words: "He who will endure to the end shall be saved" (Mt.24:13, ISRV). And so again, like the words 'Lord', 'Master', 'Saviour' and 'Deliverer' take on added meaning in our dark times, when we consider the word 'salvation' - we have to ask: do we really want this salvation? And are we, like that merchant, willing to sell everything - release all that is 'me' - in order to purchase that pearl of great price? (Mt.13:46) It isn't until the dark times that we realise just what the cost of discipleship really is and we are faced with a stark choice: Is this what I really want? Am I really willing to pay the price? Do I want Yah'shua and His Kingdom that much? We come to know ourselves far better in the dark times than in the good ones. And I must confess that what I have been discovering about myself these past few weeks has heaped shame upon my head. I was not remotely as far down the road in some areas of my life as I had supposed. Reality-checks are painful but necessary. Repenting more - when we feel we have repented as far as we ought - does not sit well in the spiritual stomach.
And yet, do we believe that we have been called? Do we believe - and accept - where He has placed us? "A failure on Yahweh's part is inconceivable," said George Müller, the famous Prussian evangelist and founder of orphanages in England. Do we believe in any part of ourselves that Yahweh has somehow got it wrong with our lives? That He has called us to the impossible? If you haven't felt that at some time, you're not human, I venture to suggest. For ministers it can be a gruelling experience as we look around and first blame ourselves and then, if we are foolish enough let ourselves sink into greater darkness, blame Yahweh. Jeremiah did. He wanted to be cursed and die. So did Job. He thought he had been hard done by Yahweh. But whoever you are, man or woman, there is an answer to this tendency to want to give up and pass the buck back to Elohim, and I believe with my heart that the solution is tied up in the sentiments that George Müller expressed when he said:
"Lord, thy servant is a poor man; but he has trusted in Thee and made his boast in Thee before the sons of men; therefore let him not be confounded! Let it not be said, 'All this is enthusiasm and therefore it is come to naught'" (Dr. A.T.Pierson, George Müller of Bristol, 1972, p.133).
Well, Yahweh did not bring George Müller's work to "naught" - He worked wonders through this man of Elohim but only because he was taken to the end of himself and exposed to the reality of himself and his true need. Jeremiah was no different. He said much the same thing as he contemplated what he thought was a total failure in his life as he lay rotting in a Judean dungeon. He begged:
"Do not abhor us, for Your Name's sake; do not disgrace the throne of Your glory" (Jer.14:21, NKJV).
From any other man's lips, that might have sounded arrogant, but you know, the spirit behind those words is the same as that of Moses' intercession for the rebellious children of Israel, when it seemed that his life's work was a failure and Yahweh declared that He would wipe the nation of Israel out and start again through Moses and his two wives, beginning a new people. And not just Moses - did not Elijah pray the same kind of prayer, reminding Yahweh of his extreme jealousy for Him? These are bold prayers and not lightly said! But they are not said from timid hearts - they are spoken from hearts deep and full of love and compassion for their people, not just for themselves. Indeed, it was their spiritual children for whom they were lifting up these heartfelt pleas.
I can say, quite confidently, that the wolves out there will not destroy this work, because I know where it comes from, and it is not of man. The hovering vultures may, every now and then, swoop down and sink their talons into us and peck out chunks of our flesh, but we will heal and be the stronger for it - because nothing that happens happens outside of Yahweh's will. He permits what He does by all kinds of unexpected and sometimes terrifying means. And you can be quite sure that He will leave no carnal places of refuge if we are earnest about fully belonging to Him.
Reading the first part of Isaiah 58 you might be tempted to think that all is gloom and destruction. It does feel as though you are 'at the end' when your sins have been exposed and you must accept responsibility and climb that mountain of self-reformation yourself, because no one else can do it for you. If we repent - if we take the bull by the proverbial horns and take responsibility for our own messes and errors, then fantastic promises are given to us. After telling us not to hide ourselves from the needs of our own flesh and blood - our families - Yahweh promises something quite amazing:
"Then shall your light break forth as the morning and your healing (your restoration and the power of a new life) shall spring forth speedily; your righteousness - your rightness, your justice and your right relationship with Elohim - shall go before you [conducting you to peace and prosperity], and the glory of Yahweh shall be your rear guard (Is.52:12; Ex.14:19-20). Then you shall call, and Yahweh will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am - I AM! ... And Yahweh will guide you continually, and satisfy you ... and make strong your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of [buildings that have laid waste for] many generations; and you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in" (Jer.8-13, AmpV).
I believe these words even though I know that having them realised in our lives costs a lot more than we could ever begin to imagine. In just under two weeks it is Shavu'ot or Pentecost - you all know what happened then. Yahweh revealed Himself mightily at Mount Sinai and betrothed Israel to Himself through covenant. I pray that this will be a great time of renewal for us as we set our houses in order, return home in tears, binding ourselves to Yahweh with an everlasting covenant, and setting our faces towards Zion, is my prayer in Yah'shua's Name, Amen.
