Chag haMatzah 2007
As You Really Are
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
Shabbat Shalom on this special High Sabbath which marks the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, also known as Chag haMatzah. The basis of our celebration today and for the next week may be found in Yahweh's words to Moses:
"Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread (Chag haMatzah), because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And whoever eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel, whether he is an alien or native-born. Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread" (Ex.12:17-20, NIV).
There are many reasons why we are to observe this festival. In this passage we are told to do it as a memorial of the time our forefathers hastily left Egypt and did not have time for their bread to rise before they baked it. But that is not the only reason. In the next chapter we read:
"For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to Yahweh. Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. On that day tell your son, 'I do this because of what Yahweh did for me when I came out of Egypt.' This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that the law of Yahweh is to be on your lips. For Yahweh brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year" (Ex.13:6-10, NIV).
Not only are we to commemorate the first of the seven days but we are to "hold a festival on the seventh day" too, the last day of Chag haMatzah. Here Yahweh tells us that we observe this festival not just as a memorial of the escape of our forefathers from Egyptian captivity but also as "a reminder" that "the Torah (Law) of Yahweh is to be on your lips". This means that it is something to be spoken of regularly. So important is this festival that it is to be "like a sign on your head and a reminder on your forehead" - and what does that remind us of? The Shema!
"Hear, O Israel: Yahweh our Elohim, Yahweh is echad (one). Love Yahweh your Elohim with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads" (Deut.6:4-8, NIV).
Chag haMatzah is important - so important that its memory should never be far from us - tied, as it were, on our foreheads where we think, and bound to our hands where we work and labour. And we are to have two Sabbaths specifically designated for contemplating the meaning of this one item - unleavened bread:
"On the fifteenth day of that month Yahweh's Feast of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast. On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. For seven days present an offering made to Yahweh by fire. And on the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work" (Lev.23:6-8, NIV).
Today there are no animals sacrifices, because Yah'shua is our Final sacrifice (Heb.10:10). Today our offering is to be what?
"The sacrifices of Elohim are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart" (Ps.51:17, NIV).
Today's sacrifices are a right attitude - a humble, submissive and gentle heart. These Yahweh "will not despise".
Gentile Christianity says that these festivals have been 'done away with' but Paul says:
"...let us keep the Festival (Chag haMatzah), not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth" (1 Cor.5:8, NIV).
The first Christians were still observing the Feast of Unleavened Bread but in a new and special way. They weren't only remembering the journey of our forefathers out of captivity but they were also focussing on what Chag haMatzah means spiritually. In His teachings, Yah'shua speaks of two kinds of yeast - the positive kind, which He likens to the activity of the Ruach haQodesh in the soul of man, bringing the Kingdom of Yahweh closer and closer, and the negative kind which he - like Yahweh to Moses - likens to sin. Of the first variety Yah'shua said:
"What shall I compare the kingdom of Elohim to? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough" (Luke 13:20-21, NIV).
And of the second, He warned:
"'Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.' Then they understood that He was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees" (Matt.16:11-12, NIV).
Specifically, Yah'shua is referring to the yeast of false doctrine and its tendency to rapidly spread and destroy the harmony and welfare of the soul and of the fellowship of Israel. Thus Paul would also say:
"You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 'A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough'" (Gal.5:7-9, NIV).
Both truth and lies are powerful because the soul is a sponge for them once it admits them. And the soul cannot live in a vacuum - it must admit the one or the other. We can choose to admit the Truth into our beings, and greatly expand and swell, resulting in a sure foundation of reality, happiness and glory; or we can admit lies, resulting in illusion, fantasy, unhappiness and shame.
"Let us keep the Festival", Paul said, "not with the old yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the [unleavened] bread of sincerity and truth".
If you backtrack a verse you'll find something even more interesting which is the theme of my sermon today:
"Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast - as you really are. For Messiah, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Cor.5:6-7, NIV).
The 'real you' is unleavened. The 'real you' is without the yeast of sin. The 'real you' is without wickedness or malice. The real you does not have evil intent. The real you does not want wrongdoing. Paul is here saying that the true you - the human you - is not malicious - it is not wicked. It is when we believe in the lies of the enemy - when we reject truth for false doctrine - that we admit demons and extend an invitation to them to dwell in our hearts. At that point their nature and ours become intertwined and hard to distinguish. Their thoughts and our thoughts get mixed. Their emotions and ours blend together. The message of Chag haMatzah is: get that demonic leaven out! Because that leaven - like the leaven of the Pharisees - leads to sin. And sin kills. The wages of sin is death. "Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast - as you really are". And then Paul adds: "For Messiah, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed".
Now you know that once you have baked a loaf of leavened bread you can't 'unleaven' it again. You can't take a loaf of ordinary bread and turn it into matzah. It's impossible. And the reason it is impossible is because the yeast has released carbon dioxide into the dough which has thoroughly permeated the whole. And when you bake it - it's then solid. You can pound the bread and make a kind of 'goo' but you can never make matzah from it. The pounding of the bread into a 'goo' is a bit like the attempts of mankind of get rid of sin by human effort. You can punish yourself - deny yourself - cut yourself - like many religions do in order to make 'self-atonement' and attempt to relieve yourself of guilt, but you will always fail.
The whole point of Chag haMatzah is to get rid of yeast out of your house and all food made with yeast. The commandment is unambiguously: Actively get sin out of your life! We're going to eat unleavened bread for a whole week to underscore how critically important this operation is. It's activity is supposed to be in our thoughts (bound to the forehead) and in our actions (bound to our hands). It's to remind us of what we have to do spiritually. Going through the motions of eating this kind of bread exclusively for a week will leave an imprint on your mind, and each year as you celebrate this festival you will remember just what Yahweh expects of you. That's why we have these festivals. They are to enable us to remember what is important in the Kingdom of Elohim, and what it actually entails to follow Yah'shua.
This is not some quaint little ritual we do in order to feel 'one' with our ancestors - this is a week-long drama to remind ourselves that sin is serious business. It's to remind us that sin is a killer. What's the remedy? Paul tells us: "Messiah, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed". That sin, left uncleansed, means that the destroying angel can have access to us both in life and - but more importantly - at the final day. But the blood of Messiah - the Lamb of Elohim - if applied to the door posts of our hearts, will remove that sin and guard us from the destroying angel. Therefore at this season we must ask ourselves this vitally important question: "AM I AZOUMOS?" That is to say, "Am I unleavened?" If you're leavened, you're in trouble. But all you have to do to get rid of that leaven is what those ancient Israelites did: apply the blood of the Lamb. It's a choice that leads to action. It's what 'being saved' actually means.
A person who chooses to believe in, and act out, lies and has demonic companions as a result, is not a completely real person. He's only half a person, or maybe even less, depending how long he has been living like this. He is not fully him- or herself. He coexists with a spiritual parasite which renders him inhuman. That parasite 'makes' him behave in ways he does not like. It makes him think and feel things he doesn't want to (Rom.7:14-25). Worse, that parasite is not static. It grows. Like yeast itself, which is a plant, once it has a host - you - it multiplies and multiplies its power and influence over you. A piece of yeast consists of minute cells, with walls composed of cellulose, and an interior of living matter called protoplasm. You can feed it with a solution of sugar to make it grow, or it can be 'killed' by 'starvation' or 'heat'. You can do the same thing with demons.
When you admit a demon into your being, you are inviting it to the table of your life energy. You're giving it a free meal ticket. It will feed on your psyche - your 'sugar' - and it will expand and slowly take over. You all know how moulds work. Single cell moulds are, in fact, yeasts. Have you ever seen mould at work on a piece of bread that's been left around for a few days? Every autumn we watch as they attack our apple harvest. In a short time an apple can turn completely rotten.
Well when you admit a demon, a similar kind of process occurs. A demon, when it's in, doesn't just 'sit there' whispering to you or making you feel anger. It spreads to other parts of your being influencing your health, sexuality, impulses, moods and behaviour generally. It's goal is the total subversion of your soul. Moulds actually secrete mycotoxins which together, with various enzymes, prevent the growth of competing micro-organisms. Demons are the same. They modify your behaviour - your thinking, feeling and actions - they compete with the Ruach so that Yah'shua cannot get entrance in. And the longer you leave those demons there, the worse it is for you - its victim - because you'll feel less and less inclined to admit Yah'shua in or allow Him control over your life. Mould kills off apples. Sin will kill you off too. That is why Chag haMatzah is not only a perpetual ordinance to be observed once a year for a week but its message must be firmly ingrained in our consciousness: we can't just sit back and assume all will remain well. Just leave an apple around for a few weeks and you'll see what I mean. Use each Yom Shanee (Monday) - the 'mini' Chag haMatzah - to remind yourself of these things.
The 'real you' is unleavened - without the yeast of malice. If that is not your behaviour, you have an unwelcome guest to content with. If you're jealous, angry, bitter, envious, irritated, getting sexually immoral thoughts and desires, or just plain indifferent and careless, then there is an enemy within who is progressively subverting you to his own ends. And if that is the case, Chag haMatzah is your wake-up call. It's Yahweh's way of saying: "Sitting around waiting for some miracle to happen won't work. You have to get off your backside and search diligently for every crumb of sin. And when you have, repent, and ask for the blood of Yah'shua to cleanse you from it."
Nowadays when you buy yeast you go to the store you get it in small packets either dry or slightly moist that comes in yellow lumps. In the old days when they made their own bread at home, there were no shops they could get yeast from. Instead they would go to a brewer and get a jug-full of brewer's yeast. The ancients did not use yeast as we know it today. Instead they prepared a leaven or 'barm', the yeasty froth on fermenting malt liquors, or from ground millet kneaded with 'must' - the pressed juice of grapes or other fruit ready for fermentation out of wine-tubs, what the Bible calls 'new wine' or unfermented grape juice [1]. But wheat-bran was also used, kneaded with a three-days-old must, dried in the sun, then made into little cakes. When required for making bread, the cakes were soaked in water, then boiled with the finest flour, after which the whole was mixed in with the meal. Another old method for making barm was to prepare cakes of barley meal and water; these were baked on a hot hearth, or else in an earthen dish upon hot ashes and left until they turned reddish-brown. Afterwards, the cakes were kept shut up in a vessel until they turned quite sour. When wanted for leaven, they were first steeped in water.
Yeast was forbidden in all sacrificial offerings. Yahweh said:
"Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast" (Ex.23:18, NIV).
However, yeast was to be present in the peace and wave offerings (Lev.7:13; 23:15-17; Hos.7:4) even though it was forbidden in meat offerings (Lev.2:11; 6:17; 10:12; Ex.23:18; 34:25). Leaven and blood are incompatible. The one must exclude the other. If we embrace sin, we exclude Yah'shua; if we embrace Yah'shua, we must stop sinning and exclude yeast. And we can't just exclude sin and leave Yah'shua out because the sin will return as Yah'shua teaches in this saying:
"When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first" (Matt.12:43-45, NIV).
Yah'shua used this as an illustration of the condition of the Judean people during His time: "That is how it will be with this wicked generation" (v.45, NIV). Simply 'purifying' your life by getting rid of the evil leaven isn't enough - it has to be replaced by good leaven - the yeast that makes the bread of "sincerity and truth". And how are you going to get that sort of yeast? From Yah'shua Himself.
"The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked all through the dough" (Matt.13:33, NIV).
He compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a little yeast - the Light of Messiah - placed into the dough - you. To "place" Yah'shua into the dough means opening your heart, inviting Him in, and giving Him full sovereignty or control, so that He can act like a 'good yeast'. This was a radical idea for the Judahites who had only ever seen yeast as something negative. But now Yah'shua is saying that something or someone has come who is equally as powerful - yet more powerful - than the yeast of malice.
If you put yeast into dough, does it just limit itself to a small part of the dough? No, it spreads over the whole dough. The yeast of righteousness is very insistent - it is not content with part - it wants all. The same is true of the demonic. Give it an inch and it'll take a yard. Give it a yard, and it'll want a mile. When one or other of the actives forces of the universes gains access to your soul, it claims all. And when a husband truly loves his wife, he too claims all because if he is in Yah'shua who also claims all, he will become like Him and want the same. Why does he want 'all'? To bless all. To give all. To give all of himself. But the demonic wants the opposite - it wants to destroy all.
What is this 'activity' of the Ruach like? I have described some of the effects of the activity of the demonic. To understand the activity of the good leaven, we must understand just what the Kingdom of Heaven is.
Firstly, we understand from Scripture that the Kingdom is both a millennial theocratic, temporal régime which Yah'shua as Regent as well as a spiritual condition that belongs to the here and now. As Yah'shua told Pilate, His Kingdom is not of this world political system (Jn.18:36). The Kingdom of Heaven is something that happens now or can happen now - if we choose it. And obviously, to have the Kingdom of Heaven at work inside you, you must first choose the King. The King is the 'good yeast', and the Kingdom is the result of the activity of the spiritual yeast at work in your heart and being. As the spiritual Kingdom works within you, so it begins to manifest outwardly too. It manifests in behaviour, the way you talk, act, react and live. It results in a visible change to your surroundings - your home and work environment. It manifests in your normal conversation, what you talk about, how you decorate your house, what you read and was you view on TV. It manifests in how you dress and the standards you maintain in general. And if you are indeed building outwardly what has been revealed inwardly, then you will find yourself automatically leading a Torah-lifestyle, because the same Power that planted the 'good yeast' in you also wrote the Torah. The cycle of your life will be based on the weekly Sabbath, the monthly new moon, and the annual festivals. Your thoughts will be upon Yah'shua and His Torah continually - your whole drive will be to manifest the inner life of the Kingdom outwardly. That's why Scripture says that the Kingdom of Heaven is not only "in" you but "among" you too.
With Yah'shua the yeast leavening your heart and implanting His Kingdom within you, you also experience a change of citizenship. Paul says: "Our citizenship is in heaven" (Phil.3:20, NIV). We have a new nationality and a new passport. When Ruth followed Naomi to Israel, she renounced her Moabite nationality and became the nationality of her new husband, Boaz. She became a Judahite-Israelite. Part of the manifestation of the Kingdom of Heaven in the life of a soul - part of the leavening process - is that it at once diminishes our interest in the earthly country of our birth. We cease being British, American, Swedish or Indian in our hearts. These nations are, in any case, only temporary. Their culture, with its fashions and entertainments and ways of doing things, is constantly changing with the whims of carnal man and the premeditations of evil men serving a satanic agenda. We owe allegiance to only one country - to the Kingdom of Elohim. We are Yah'shua's allegorical Bride, and when we 'marry' a husband from a different nation to our own, we adopt his nation and leave our own behind - forever. That is why, in part, we have the story of Ruth in our Bibles. But not only her. Rahab ceased being a Caananite-Jerichoite and became an Israelite through marriage. The only way we can obtain our husband's identity is if we abandon the identity we had as a single. Yah'shua purchased us with his blood. Now we are Messianic Israelites and when the Millennium come we won't be British, American, Swedish or whatever. These nations will, first of all, become provinces of Messianic Israel, and second, their existing culture will be swept away. If you define your identity in terms of MacDonalds, Big Ben, Trondheim Cathedral, the monarchy, the republic, the Constitution, smorgasbord, skiing, saris, or anything man-made, you are at once defining yourself apart from Messiah and apart from Torah. You are inviting the enemy back in again.
Now I know that this kind of statement offends nationalistic sensibilities. I say this as one who was once a fervent nationalist. And I am not, I must add, saying you should be disloyal to your earthly country. You should pray for its government and pay your taxes. You should obey all laws that do not force you to break Yahweh's if you are living in that country. It is a necessary burden until Yah'shua returns. But if you are submitted to Yah'shua, you cannot have two kings or two torah's - you can only have one. You can't have two heads - you can't have dual citizenship in your heart because you'll come to love the one and hate the other (Mt.6:24; Lk.16:13)
When you leave the world system you are also abandoning its culture and the marks of identity it gave you as an unbeliever. Yah'shua claims that identity as your new Husband. There won't be any MacDonalds, British monarchies, worldly movies, or anything like that in the Kingdom of Yahweh. All these things will pass away. And for the believer, it is necessary that their emotional attachments to these things pass away too. Religious syncretism - the blending of Yahweh's Torah with nationalism - has always led to disaster. It's the cult of the nation - ('cult-ure'). We are to be a set-apart people - a separate people (e.g. Lev.15:31; Ezra 10:11b) - in the world system and culture but definitely not of it. Culture that is antagonistic to Torah, to the proper order of Yahweh's system, and to what makes us a peculiar system, belongs to the demonic realm - they're the ones who set it up in opposition to Yahweh's model. They set up Santa Claus in place of Messiah. They set the whole fast-food industry which is murdering people with its unhealthy and unkosher content. They set up the whole competitive capitalistic system which is contrary to Torah's which equalises wealth at the Jubilee and they set up socialism which is a counterfeit of the Kingdom, the state taking the place of Elohim and robbing Him of His tithes as well as robbing people of their wealth. They set up the social welfare system which destroys initiative, cripples work inertia, and makes the government a god. Yahweh's system is infinitely superior, and totally righteous. As I've told you before, it has no ex-convicts or prisons Those of you who have been reading the first five books of the Bible carefully this year for the first time in your lives will have had a wholly new world opened up to you. That is what we now belong to as citizens of the new Israelite Commonwealth.
From the very moment Yahweh called me to this ministry, I was plunged into the battle against nationalistic chauvinism and the liberal mantra of 'cultural diversity'. The Christian Church has been compromising in this area since the great apostasy in the third century A.D. They say the Gospel should be adapted to different cultures. Anyone who has studied the Torah knows that is nonsense. You can only get such a liberal point-of-view if you ignore the Old Testament and invent your own. You can't have a proper New Testament faith without the Old Testament foundation.
We belong to a new nation - currently heavenly, but partially manifest in the places where we are living, which will be even more manifest when we gather, until it is fully manifested in the twelve cities of refuge for seven years before Yah'shua returns. I am of British origin, some of you are American, some Scandinavian, some Indian, some African. Yahweh is gathering us out of our countries not only physically but also spiritually. He is re-creating us into a new nation. The Israelites who were slaves in Egypt were Egyptians - they brought with them Egyptian thinking, Egyptian customs, Egyptian habits and Egyptian paganism. And the truth is, they loved it even if they hated their slavery. That's why they had a party in the desert and had a pagan orgy dancing around a golden calf. And the reason Moses gave the depressing prophecy at the end of the Book of Deuteronomy of how the Israelites would return to the ways of the pagan nations was to warn us that when we belong to Yahweh, he claims all - your name, the culture, your background, your habits, your behaviour, your nature - everything. And when you refuse any part you end up like Roman Catholicism which is just different forms of paganism coated with a veneer of Christianity.
When you allow Yah'shua into your heart, and the leaven of the Ruach haQodesh to work through you, you are giving Him sovereignty. Now what does that mean in practice? Millions of people call Yah'shua or Jesus 'Lord' but what do they mean by that? When you acknowledge a new Sovereign, as Ruth and Rahab did, you acknowledge a new government, a new law, and a new culture, and you abandon what you had before. Ruth did not retain her Moabite ways. Ruth had a completely right heart in this matter when she said to her mother-in-law:
"Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your Elohim my Elohim. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me" (Ruth 1:16-17, NIV).
Ruth and Rahab had choices to make - they could have retained their Moabite and Canaanite identities and indeed hankered for home, as Ruth's sister-in-law, Orpah, did and ended up returning pack to her pagan culture and what was familiar to her. Rahab could have stayed where she was and got killed along with the rest of the inhabitants of Jericho. You may recall that not so long ago I spoke to you about the dark or unredeemed side of Rahab, the Babylonian female monster of chaos of whom Job speaks (Job 9:13; 26:12). But there is a third Rahab too - the one that tries to be neutral or whole the middle ground, the lukewarm heart that refuses to choose one way of the other. Yahweh speaks through Isaiah:
"...to Egypt, whose help is utterly useless. Therefore I call her Rahab the Do-Nothing (sit still) (Rahab-Hem-Shebeth - NKJV)" (Isa.30:7, NIV).
Rahab, in the Hebrew, you may recall, means 'pride', 'strength' or 'arrogance'. When those who opt for the neutral position - the non-choosing position - their 'strength', like the Egyptians, is to "sit still" or "do nothing". Egypt's 'do nothing' policy was fatal - it was in invitation to invasion. As sinners like Rahab, we must choose to either throw in our lot with Messianic Israel and her King and be saved, get destroyed, or become "Rahab-Hem-Shebeth" - "Rahab the Do-Nothing", "Rahab the Sitting-Still" and get destroyed anyway. Because as I have told you so many times, to refuse to choose Yahweh is to choose Satan. So what will you do? You can be the courageous Rahab and get saved, be a neutral Rahab in your pride and drift into death and nothingness, or be the loyal pagan Rahab and be destroyed under the walls of Jericho.
Where orthodox Christianity has gone wrong historically is simple: it has rejected the nation of Israel - not your modern-day Republic in the Middle East - but Yahweh's Kingdom. And Yahweh's Kingdom is build squarely around Torah which is the Law of the Nation of Israel. When you accept the Messiah you also accept nationality in Messianic Israel, with all its customs, rules and ways. A newly wedded wife is supposed to give the same allegiance to her husband. She belongs to him and to his kingdom as a king of Messianic Israel. Satan divides loyalties and allegiances. If a wife is not fully devoted to her husband, her split loyalties will cause friction, instability and dissolution. If a husband is not fully loyal and devoted to Yahweh and His Torah, this will lead to inner division and eventual apostasy. Satan always targets divine authority structures, and he'll just as easily use 'culture' as he will flesh-and-blood people. When we join Yah'shua's Family we join a Household - the "household of faith", the "household of Elohim" (1 Tim.3:5). That Household was set-up six thousand years ago. Our own households are within that Greater Household. Our loyalty has to be complete. We can't be divided and survive.
When Yah'shua described the Kingdom of Heaven like leaven in bread, the Judahites must have been very surprised. For the most part, they viewed leaven much as we do at this festival of Chag haMatzah. 99% of the time in Scripture leaven is seen as bad. Yet now Yah'shua is turning this image around and making leaven something pure and beautiful. They would know from the Levitical sacrificial system that no leaven was allowed because the sacrifices depicted the sinless Messiah (Lev.2:11). And yet leaven was in the wave offering. Why? The two wave loaves at Shavu'ot or Pentecost were leavened bread! (Lev.23). Since they contain leaven, they cannot represent the sinless Messiah. So who do they represent? US! We're full of leaven - full of sin. But Yah'shua accepts us because of what?
"But if we walk in the light, as [Yahweh] is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Yah'shua, His Son, purifies us from all sin" (1 John 1:7, NIV).
Yahweh knows what we are made of and gives us grace through repentance:
"As a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear Him; for He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust" (Ps.103:13-14, NIV).
We are the wave offering. The husband must present himself to his priest, to the Council of Yah's elohim, to be 'waved'. The wife must present herself to her husband in the same way. This bad yeast is constantly at work in us and spreads when we delay repenting or fail to repent. It sets us back time and time again. It results in the frustrating experiencing of advancing three steps and falling back one or two like a seesaw. That's why we have to search for the leaven and get it out. Paul said:
"You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? That kind of persuasion does not come from the One who calls you. 'A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough'" (Gal.5:7-9, NIV).
Who indeed. You don't need me to tell you but I will anyway: Satan, and his agents, his traditions, his culture, his lawlessness, his everything that sets itself up against the Kingdom of Yahweh. That's why we are so determined in this ministry not to give an inch. We follow the admonition of Paul who said:
"For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of Elohim, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Messiah. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete" (2 Cor.10:3-6, NIV).
This has to be a thorough cleansing, brethren and sisters, down to the very last thought. And if that sounds like brainwashing to you, consider that this is exactly what the world system is doing - they want you to think as they do, they want an homogenous society controlled by man, a society that copies many of the things of Elohim but whose god is the devil. Every day at state school are children are being conditioned to think in one way - the world's. Yahweh says: you have to resist that and think in His way, building His set-apart culture.
A person said to me recently that they were spiritual but not religious. When I asked what was meant by that, I was told that the inner life was spiritual but the outer life was 'religious'. That's nonsense. Yahweh views a person as a whole, integral structure. In and out constitute one echad - we can't divide them off. That's one way we become double-minded. It's how Satan splits and conquers. He wants us to live a double-life. And that's the whole point of the Kingdom of Heaven - it isn't just a matter of being 'inside' - it's in and out. Only the Amplified Version of the Bible gets the true sense when Yah'shua says:
"For behold, the Kingdom of Elohim is within you (in your hearts) and among you (surrounding you)" (Luke 17:21, Amp.Ver.).
It's in your hearts and in your environment - where you live. Your reflection of the Kingdom is as a light on a hill (Mt.5:14-16). And if instead you are reflecting something that diminishes or reduces the Messianic Israelite Kingdom of God, then are you reflecting something alien and destructive. You are succumbing to devilish reasoning. Remember what Paul said: "That kind of persuasion does not come from the One who calls you" (Gal.5:8, NIV). That kind of "persuasion" prevents you from obeying the truth - it prevents you from becoming a loaf of bread full of "sincerity and truth".
I would like to invite every one of you this week to sit down for a few minutes sometime during Chag haMatzah and write down a list of all the things that symbolise your country or culture that you love and cherish. Then check to see if they are compatible with the Torah and the building of Messianic Israel, and if there are any conflicts of loyalty. It's amazing how many icons or idols that our cultures have given to us. It can be TV shows, types of food, stores, humour, anything. One thing I used to love was the British 'bacon and eggs'. Well, Torah told me that bacon was not only not food but those who eat pork are demonstrating that they do not belong to the Kingdom of Yahweh (Lev.11:7-8; Dt.14:8). I also used to like fried bread - bread fried in fat. Then I learned that Torah says we should not eat fat (Lev.3:17). I used to love liver until I learned that Torah says we are not to eat blood (Lev.7:26-27). Then I used to think the monarchy was an important stabilising force in British society - then I learned that they were practically all Illuminists serving a satanic agenda. Their immorality was a disgrace. I used to listen to lots of British humour, but the more I immersed myself in the Torah the more antichrist I saw it. I used to be a nationalist but then realised it was idolatry. Living in many countries has shown me what is kosher and what is not - what is pure and what is impure, what pleases Yahweh and what He hates. I don't worship my country anymore. I worship Yahweh. My country and I have parted company.
If you're an American you probably revere the Constitution which was written by more Illuminists dedicated to the establishment of a New World Order - their symbol is on the $1 bill. Check it against the Torah which is Yahweh's constitution and see if it matches. I know Americans who go through withdrawal symptoms coming to Europe - they miss their Walmart, their TV shows, and much else that defines American culture - they just can't exist without it. I have known the wives of American servicemen stationed in Europe break down without their culture and go back to America, leaving their husbands behind. Why? That is a question all true believers must honestly ask. How would they have fared in ancient Israel? How would you or I fare? How are we going to manage in the Millennium when Yah'shua's Kingdom sweeps all the kingdoms of the world away? Yahweh says:
"You must not live according to the customs of the nations" (Lev.20:23, NIV).
"I see a people who live apart and do not consider themselves one of the nations" (Num.23:9, NIV).
"If you fully obey the Yahweh your Elohim and carefully follow all His commands I give you today, Yahweh your Elohim will set you high above all the nations on earth" (Deut.28:1-2, NIV).
Of Joseph the firstborn heir, Yahweh says:
"Let all these [blessings] rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers. In majesty he is like a firstborn bull; his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the nations, even those at the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim; such are the thousands of Manasseh" (Deut.33:16-17, NIV).
Brethren and sisters, we already have a nation! We may not carry passports that are inscribed with 'Messianic Israel' yet, not is there a postage stamp with the same on yet, nor a country thus labelled in a world atlas yet, but that nation is being revealed and it is coming in power, a power that will be fully revealed when Yah'shua returns. Meanwhile it's here - in us - if we'll do what Torah says.
Our countries are not run by godly people anymore - the culture is pre-planned and packaged to serve an ungodly agenda. And you and I have been called to get out of it. If we don't, we and our children will be swallowed up by it. It is natural to have sentimental attachments - there was a time when I felt more Malaysian than British, then I felt more British than Malaysian, then I started feeling progressively more Scandinavian than British until Yahweh showed me that I was hopping about the place and not building my foundation right. Now I am a Messianic Israelite - I belong to Yah'shua's Nation and that has become more and more real to me as time has gone on, especially since I became Torah-observant and especially since I started consecrating and dedicating the land I live on to Yahweh. I do it every day and each day the reality of that Kingdom grows stronger. I have rejected the territorial demons of the land which might cause me to become sentimentally attached. I have fixed my colours to the mast of my eternal country.
I am here standing before you with an agenda - I want to influence you. I really do. That's the only reason I preach. I want to persuade you to embrace Yah'shua as your Master and Deliverer ('Lord and Saviour') and I want you to abandon the world system and immerse yourself in culture of New Covenant Torah. I use the word 'persuade'. If you are outside my immediate family, that's all I have the right to do - to persuade you. In my family it is the law. I establish the rules. But before the assemblies I seek to draw you by the attraction of the Ruach haQodesh. I want you to join in the campaign with me to get the sin of leaven out of this Mishpachah because I want to present you as a pure, virgin bride to Yah'shua when my life's work is done. I am assuming that you came to this Mishpachah precisely so that you could be guided in that direction. Isn't that why? I hope it wasn't so you could join a social club, though social we most certainly are too. My calling - and that of every pastor, elder and husband in this fraternity, is the same as Paul's who said:
"I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Messiah, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to Him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Messiah" (2 Cor.11:2-4, NIV).
That is my job description as a pastor, husband and father, and I shall pursue that to the very best of my ability to the end of my life. To that end, Chag haMatzah is very important indeed to me. It reminds me both of what I have to persuade you to do as well as what I must continue doing myself! My war- your war - our war - is against the corruption of the world and of the devil as represented by yeast, because corruption has a tendency to rise, multiply and overwhelm. Every year I must repeat the same or a similar message. I must teach the same basic truths again and again, and when I am sure you have understood and embraced them, then I must move on and teach you about the meat of the Kingdom. But today is milk - the basics.
Once again I am asking you to make an important choice while we have the special anointing of the Ruach haShanee to do so - She will enable you to choose to be Rahab the Israelite and abandon Rahab the Do-Nothing Egyptian and Rahab the I-Like-Being-a-Pagan- Doing-My-Own-Thing Canaanite. She will enable you to be a Ruth, abandoning her pagan homeland of Moab, which in Hebrew means 'of his (or her) father'. We have a new Fatherland - Messianic Israel - and must learn to become faithful citizens of it. To do that, we must become as we really are supposed to be - unleavened bread or matzah - abandoning sin and the allurements of the world by declaring: "The world system - and my own nation - is no longer my father or my mother. I have found my true Father and Mother. I have come home". Amen.
Endnotes
- [1] If you read the Torah carefully, you'll see that one of the blessings of the land was the production of non-alcoholic "new wine" (e.g. Gen.27:37; Num.18:12; Dt.7:13; cp. Neh.9:37). Yahweh did not intend His people to drink anything older and therefore alcoholic. They could scoop off the 'must' to make yeast but they were not to allow the wine to ferment.
