The Elect of Yahweh
Messiahs and Set-Apart Women
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
Brethren and sisters, I welcome you in the Name of our Messiah, Christ, Lord, Saviour, Deliverer, Redeemer, Rescuer, Master, King, Anointed One and Elohim -- Yah'shua! And if you are wondering why I have attached all these titles to the One we serve, it is not because I am trying to be extra reverent, but because I am strongly constrained by the Ruach to teach you a principle that has been on my heart for years which only now I am permitted to unfold to you. But before I do, may I ask this of you: please don't go comparing what I am about to share with you with other theologies and systems which use similar terminology but have a totally different meaning. A few weeks ago I told you about the Hebrew word elohim, the title we usually translate as 'God', 'gods' or 'mighty ones' which is used of Yahweh, Yah'shua, the Ruach haQodesh or Holy Spirit, Yahweh's Malakim or angels, and Yahweh's earthly Israelite rulers. I told you that the word elohim meant 'ruler' or 'rulers' and could be used of both mortals and immortals.
I have always been proud of the English language for its breath of vocabulary and expressiveness but only now am I beginning to understand what a confusing and mixed-up language it really is. Just as the United States is known as the melting pot of all the races of the world who have sought refuge, safety and prosperity, so the English language is a hodge-podge of Saxon-German, Angle, Jute, Danish, Norwegian, Celtic, Latin, Greek and French. What this means in practice is that we can have many words, all deriving from different languages, saying the same thing, but because they sound different, we have attributed different shades of meaning to them over time. So that when it comes to religious language - the language of theology - there is enormous confusion.
I started my sermon with a string of titles for Yah'shua - 11 words altogether - which come from different languages. 'Messiah' comes from the Hebrew mashiach and means 'anointed' one - one who is set-apart or 'smeared with oil' to be ... guess what ... a ruler or elohim. The word 'Christ' means exactly the same thing, coming from the Greek christos, the 'christed' or 'anointed one'. This anointing oil is first mentioned in the Torah when Moses was given directions from Yahweh how to make it (Ex.30:25). It was used to anoint the furniture of the tabernacle and the ark of the covenant in order to consecrate or separate them for exclusive use as sacred items. But it was also used to consecrate people, and in particular Yahweh's priests (Ex.28:41). Aaron was set-apart, consecrated and anointed as Israel's first Cohen Gadol or High Priest with this oil (Ex.29:7). We read further: "'Bring his sons and dress them in tunics. Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve Me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throught the age (dispensation, olam).' Moses did everything just as Yahweh commanded him" (Ex.40:14-16).
Note this, and note this well: that every priest in Israel was an 'anointed one' or a 'messiah'. When the oil was administered it was poured over the head "running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments" (Ps.133:2, NKJV), a picture of the Ruach haQodesh or Holy Spirit covering the individual, the very presence of Yahweh Himself. This same oil was subsequently used to anoint, consecrate, set-apart (make holy) the Kings of Israel and the ordinance was carried out by a prophet or a priest, sometimes by both. The first of these kings was Saul, who was anointed with oil by Samuel to be "Yahweh's anointed", in other words, "Yahweh's messiah" or "Yahweh's christ" (1 Sam.10.2; 16:13 cp. Ps.89:20; 1 Sam.24:6; Ps.2:2). Prophets like Elisha were anointed in exactly the same way (1 Ki.19:16) Indeed the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are similarly called 'messiahs' because of their prophetic rôles (Gen.20:7), Thus we read in the Psalms:
"They wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake He rebuked kings: 'Do not touch My anointed ones (messiahs, christs); do My prophets no harm" (Ps.105:13-15, NIV).
And it may even surprise you to learn that Yahweh calls the pagan king Cyrus His 'anointed' - His 'messiah' (Is.45:1). Messiahs, then, are those men whom Yahweh has appointed, selected or chosen for a special prophetic rôle, office or mission. These 'messiahs' are empowered by Yahweh Himself to carry out special and particular functions as His elohim within His divine historical plan. In other words, there have been thousands of messiahs in Israelite history performing diverse jobs such as patriarchs, priests, prophets, judges and kings. A messiah is a man with a divine commission. So it will not come as a surprise to you to learn that these same specially commissioned men are also saviours, deliverers and redeemers, and that these words all essentially mean 'messiah' too. Let's take a quick look at them.
First 'saviour'. This is a loan word we have from Latin, salvare, which means to 'save' or 'deliver', but which originally comes from the Hebrew y'shua meaning 'safety'. The Greek equivalent is sôteria which means 'redemption' or 'rescue'. All these words mean one thing: the action or result of deliverance or preservation from danger or disease. Thus the deliverers of Israel in the times of the Judges, like Samson, are rightly described as 'rescuers', 'deliverers', 'redeemers', 'messiahs' and 'christs'.
Now before some of you start falling off your chairs, or thoughts of 'apostate' or 'heretic' roll off your lips, may I remind you that just as there are different types or orders of elohim, so there are different types or order of messiah. They all have the same qualities, whether they belong to mortals or immortals, but differ in degree. Thus Yahweh-Elohim is of a completely different order or degree to an Israelite elohim-priest. And Yah'shua the Messiah, our Deliverer from sin, is of a completely different order to an Israelite Judge or Priest who is likewise a messiah. You will recall that Yah'shua Himself quoted Psalm 82, which I cited two weeks ago, in which He said:
"Yah'shua answered them, "Is it not written in your Torah, 'I have said you are elohim'? If he (King David) called them elohim, to whom the word of Elohim came - and the Scripture cannot be broken - what about the One whom the Father set apart as His very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse Me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am Elohim's Son'? Do not believe Me unless I do what my Father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father'" (John 10:34-39, NIV).
You will recall that they tried to seize and kill Yah'shua for saying that and doubtless many Christians would want to seize and kill me for claiming that I, as a Pastor, am a messiah. Now to be fair, it has to be said that these scriptures have been abused. There are men in the charismatic movement, who are secret satanists, going aroung warning people not to criticise them because they are 'the Lord's anointed'. They even threaten them with curses and loss of life. There will always be people who abuse the Torah and who claim offices Yahweh never gave them. There are many hoodwinked believers who insist that we must respect and honour such men as claim to be "the Lord's anointed" simply because they call themselves 'evangelists', 'preachers' or whatever. Speaking of the Cohen Gadol or High Priest, the Apostle Paul says in Hebrews:
"No one takes this [priesthood] honour upon himself; he must be called by Elohim, just as Aaron was. So Messiah also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a High Priest" (Heb.5:4-5, NIV).
So it follows that there are those who are taking these messianic honours upon themselves when they have no authority to do so. How, them, are we supposed to know who is who? Who are the bona fide ministers and who are not? Are the genuine ones those who have certificates from seminaries showing 'legal ordinations', or must they possess authority from angels (as Mormons claim) or belong to some bogus 'one and only trye church or organisation' like Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons? The answer is neither. Neither of these confer authority. Yah'shua tells us that true authority comes from the works a man performs, showing that Yahweh is with Him, and the fact that He is of Messianic Israel - in other words, he will not be Torahless or preaching against Torah, but be observing it as a true Israelite. Non-Israelites are not authorised, and even those who have entered Israel and are observing Torah are not authorised unless the hand of Yahweh is unmistably upon them and they are performing the scriptural works of a messiah or deliverer.
You will recall, I am sure, that Boaz, who married Ruth, is known as a 'kinsman-redeemer' (Ruth 4:8). Ruth, as you know, was a widow, of Moabite origin previously married to an Israelite who died. She chose to trust in Yahweh and follow her mother-in-law Naomi back to Israel whereas her sister Orpah, who had married another of Naomi's sons, chose not to follow Yahweh and returned to pagan Moab as an unbeliever. You all know the story of Ruth and Boaz. Single, unprotected and uncovered, Boaz provided the obligatory kinsman's covering for her, which was His duty as a close relative, and redeemed Naomi and Ruth out of poverty and destitution. First he adopted her as his daughter (Ruth 2:8) and then, when she asked to be his bride, he redeemed her out of singleness and became her husband too (Ruth 4:13), becoming the messiah, redeemer and saviour of both Ruth and her mother-in-law. Every man is called to be a husband, and every husband is called to be a father and a priest for his family, and every father is called to be a messiah and deliverer. Some fathers are called to special priesthood service in various offices and become messiahs and deliverers on a different level, performing redemptive work for Yahweh's children as Apostles, Pastors, Evangelsists, Zaqenim (Elders), Shamashim (Deacons), and so on. Thus Yahweh says of these men:
"Deliverers (Saviours, KJV/NKJV) will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be Yahweh's" (Obadiah 21, NIV).
These saviours, deliverers or redeemers are saved Messianic Israelites who have been redeemed out of sin by the Messiah, Yah'shua. The Edomites here are the pretenders, representing the lawless believers who reject Torah and the Commonwealth of Israel. The salvation of Israel comes out of Zion (Ps.14:7; 53;6), not Edom, and not the modern republic of Israel which is ruled by Edomite-Khazar Jews who reject the true Messiah whilst awaiting their own.
Despite his sins and failings, King David always remained "a man after Elohim's own heart" and was the model for the future Messianic King, Yah'shua (1 Sam.13:14). Now that the Messiah, Redeemer, Deliverer and King has come, all contemporary messiahs are supposed to reflect the perfection of Yah'shua's human qualities and so, by their messianic lives, point back to the Divine Messiah. As Yah'shua is the Ruler or Elohim of all men, so are Yahweh's human messiahs likewise rulers - rulers of their families and rulers in the clan and tribal assemblies and in the scattered nation of Messianic Israel as a whole. As messiahs and deliverers, they must be able to 'deliver the goods' as it were. To be a messiah-ruler, they must be overcomers (which is what turns them from being deceiving Jabobs into righteous Israels) and they must know how to wage war and defeat the unseen demonic powers and principalities that ceaselessly war against man (Eph.6:12). We speak rather glibly about 'deliverance ministers' forgeting that the context of deliverance is always messianic and familial. That is why the New Testament insists that Pastors, Elders and Deacons must be married - they must be family men fully acting in the rôle of messiahs with orderly households (1 Tim.3; Tit.1).
I have, throughout these sermons on the Garden, repeatedly emphasised the importance of women being covered by fathers and husbands because they cannot cover themselves. What this means, in another way, is that women are not messiahs, deliverers and saviours in quite the same way as men are. Their 'anointing' or 'messiahship' is quite different.
Last week I spoke to you at some length on the Heavenly Mother and I promised that today I would speak a little about some of the great women of Elohim. You will recall that the Mother is also called Elohim which means that she too is a 'ruler' but in a different sphere to Yahweh and subject to Him. So it will come as no surprise to you to learn that women are also messiahs like the men who rule and govern them but in a different way. How is that? Well, it is very simple: As the men are messiahs and elohim by designation or appointment of Yahweh, so women are messiahs and elohim by appointment of their husbands. And what does the husband appoint his wife to be elohim-ruler and messiah-deliverer over? His children. As Yah'shua says and does only what His Heavenly Father tells Him to say and do, so husbands are to only say and do what Yah'shua tells them to say and do, so wives are to only say and do what their husbands tell them to say or do. This is the strict order or Messianic Israel. There is no other order and everything else is lawless and unsafe. What, then, is a woman to do when she has no father or husband to imitate and obey in Yah'shua? She must obtain a spiritual father and come under his redemptive covering. Only then is she capable of fulfilling her divinely-assigned rôle as a messiah and elohim over her children.
Under appointment from their messiah-husbands, wives may become the messianic and elohim-mothers of not only their own literal off-spring but over their adopted sons and daughters also, but always under the direction of those children's fathers and their husbands. Within the assembly of Messianic Israel she may perform these elohim and messianic rôles as a spiritual mother as a teacher and guide (under her husband-pastor or -elder) of other women and spiritually immature men as a Deaconess, Eldress or Pastress. She is not, however, a Pastress without a Pastor-husband over her, or an eldress without an Elder-husband over her, or a Deaconess without an Elder- or Deacon-husband over her.
With the virtues and spiritual characteristics of women so clearly defined in Scriptures, making them daughters of Sarah (1 Pet.3:5-6), and about which I spoke much last week, it often surprises and confuses believers to read about the Judge and Prophetess Deborah. This solitary figure, who is the darling of feminist Christians, has been used to suggest a totally different type of woman that that approved of by Yahweh in Torah. And it is perfectly true that Yahweh raised her and used her in a male rôle, but not because He wished women to occupy that rôle, but because at that particular time there were no fit men to be national deliverers. She is the exception rather than the rule, just as occasionally we have had, and may well still have, Pastresses presiding over assemblies alone simply because there are no mature men to do the job. It is a dangerous thing to make exceptions into rules. There is no doubt that women have the ability to perform many masculine rôles but is is neither natural for them nor is it good for them, because the result is that over a long period of time they always become defeminised. In the same way, it is never Yahweh's will that believers marry unbelievers, or prostitutes for that matter; and yet He called Esther to marry a pagan king, as a personal sacrifice, for the redemption of Judah in exile, and He called a prophet to marry a whore to show apostate Israel how obnoxious their heathen practices were to El Elyon. So please do not use exceptions to justify that which is unnatural, nor assume that Yahweh cannot make exceptions to meet a local emergency. For both are true.
One of the great female messiahs and deliverers of Israel was, in my view, Hannah, who we read about in the first two chapters of the first book of Samuel. I have to say I actually find her quite an amazing woman. Her husband's sister-wife Peninah was a hard-hearted, arrogant and mean-spirited woman and reminds a little of Abraham's second wife Hagar. She mocked Hannah because Hannah was barren like her spiritual foremother Sarah. Isn't it interesting how Yahweh stretches the hearts of His great men and women alike and moulds them into something quite admirable. There was Peninah, constantly provoking Hannah, rubbing salt into her wound, yet she bore with her suffering and become someone great.
This woman resolved her problem by making a vow to Yahweh that she would dedicate the firstborn son He gave her to temple service as a consecrated, set-apart Nazirite - yes, you've guessed, as a messiah. And shortly after she entered this covenant, what happened? She got pregnant with Samuel! You see, messiah-prophets are frequently produced by messiah-women. Samuel means 'heard by El' - Yahweh always respects covenants if they are lawful and made in true faith, because a covenant is a committment. A covenant is saying: "I will, in Your strength" rather than a vague promise like "I'll do my best". Covenant acknowledges no possibility for failure where as "doing ones best" contains within it a seed of doubt.
As soon as the infant Samuel was weaned she gave the boy to Yahweh - not just in her head and heart but literally. That is no small thing for a mother, physically leaving a child behind. It is no small sacrifice. It is an enormous one for you may know of a mother's affection for her children. Yet she did so, in faith, keeping her vow. And that, brethren and sisters, is a hallmark of a messiah for messiahs make real sacrifices. They offer much and that offering costs them - it costs them dearly. But once Yahweh had blessed her womb, she got as many as seven children. Peninah, the mean-hearted one, though fruitful, was miserable, and pined away. Peninah's heart was defiled, Hannah's pure, another sign of a messiah. As we read the Prayer of Hannah (1 Sam.2:1-10), which could so easily be a Psalm of David, we are reminded of Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, and Mary the mother of the King-Messiah Himself. Let's read it:
"My heart rejoices in Yahweh; My horn is exalted in Yahweh .I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. No one is holy like Yahweh ,For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our Elohim. Talk no more so very proudly; Let no arrogance come from your mouth, For Yahweh is the Elohim of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty men are broken, And those who stumbled are girded with strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble. Yahweh kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up. Yahweh makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh's, And He has set the world upon them. He will guard the feet of His holy ones, But the wicked shall be silent in darkness. For by strength no man shall prevail. The adversaries of Yahweh shall be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of His messiah (annointed)" (1 Sam.2:1-10, NKJV).
There is great strength and great faith in this woman. How that covenant turned her around and filled her with the Ruach! This is no timid maiden - humble and submissive though she was - but also a tower of virtue and faith. She produced a messiah - a prophet of Yahweh, a mighty one or elohim of Israel.
Which brings me in conclusion to one of those enigmatic passages of the New Testament which ceases to be enigmatic in the light of what a human messiah is. We read:
"Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control" (1 Tim.2:13-15, NKJV).
Now as we read this Greek derived version we are left in a state of confusion for surely 'salvation', in the traditional evengelical sense, is through faith in Yah'shua alone for both men and women? The Greek rendition, sozo, which means to 'save', 'deliver', or 'protect' is unfortunate and we can only understand the original meaning of this scripture in the Hebraic forms: "But she has (gives) life by the hand of her children" (HRV; cp. Gen.3:15-16) or as another version puts it: "She shall give brachot (blessings) and chayim (life) by the children she bears" (RSTN). Woman is, of course, the life-giver - the mother, just as Ruach gives spiritual, psychic and physical life through breath. And it makes perfect sense that a male messiah should be produced by a female messiah - one producing and nurturing the other, producing a likeness of herself.
A man should therefore be very careful whom he marries, and vice versa, for spiritual quality means everything. Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary - all female messiahs, culminating in the apex of female messiahs, Mary the mother of Yah'shua.
May all of Yahweh's anointed ones or messiahs be blessed and may they be upheld with honour and respect by all of Messianic Israel. Amen.
