The Garden of Yahweh
Understanding Changes and Seasons
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
"Woe to you scribes (Torah-teachers), because you have taken away the keys of knowledge. You have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering" (Luke 11:52, HRV).
These words of Yah'shua (Jesus) were addressed to the professional scripture-teaching and -interpreting class of the day, rather like our modern seminary and univesity professors of theology. I remember attending a theology lecture at Oxford University given by Professor Barr on the Old Testament in the days when I was very intellectually-centred in my 'spiritual' life. The lecture was very brilliant, the man knew his classical Hebrew and had a few insightful things to say. After the meeting I watched as the theologians filed out onto the street utterly absorbed in their thinking process and quite unaware of the people around them. On another occasion I invited one of the leading experts on the Dead Sea Scrolls to lunch, Dr. Geza Vermes, to pick his brains on a few things that interested me theologically. As I look back on those two very intellectually brilliant men and see what it is the Yahweh has given to us as a people, I am frankly astonished. No longer do we have to pour over the minutae of Hebrew or Greek words because we are able to go to source and get crystal clear revelation from Yah'shua's (Jesus') own mouth. When the 12 people who have entered the garden are all are being told exactly the same things by Yah'shua (Jesus), often independently of one another, as we discussed last week, we have cause to celebrate and rejoice, for we are beginning to taste the fulfillment of the prophecy given by Jeremiah:
"'I will put my Torah (law) in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their Elohim (God), and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbour, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know Yahweh,' because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest,' declares Yahweh" (Jer.31:33-34, NIV).
Needless to say this passage has been misinterpreted and abused. One of my sons directed me to a Christian discussion board the other day in which they were trying to interpret dreams. A woman, claiming to be a 'prophet', boldly proclaimed that a woman who appeared in another believer's dream was respresentative of something godly. We, however, who have seen and experienced so much in the Garden, know that this was, in truth, a demoness impersonating the Ruach haQodesh (Holy Spirit). We just 'know' - we don't even need to analyse because the Ruach has been such an intimate companion of late that the presence of demons is unmistakable.
Today I want to talk to you about changes and seasons in the Garden because initially those coming into the garden experience both the reality and a number of illusions. In short, they bring their demons with them which distorts their spiritual vision. Last week a demon appeared in the garden dressed as an old woman in rags which at once elicited the sympathy of the lady I had brought in. When I told her it was a demon in disguise she was indignant that I was not caring. Quickly praying for Yahweh to expose all deceptions revealed the demonic trickery resulting in my expelling the demon. Dark mirrors have appeared in the garden caused again by the demonic along with various other objects unnatural to the garden designed to distract and mislead, usually as we are on our way to visit Yah'shua. As I warned in a previous sermon, the demonic tries to make counterfeit manifestations. The question naturally arises: how can the demonic appear in the Garden of Yahweh?
Firstly, let me remind you that in the original Garden of Eden Satan was allowed to have a presence but only in one location: the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, otherwise known as the Tree of Death. I have been asked if our own gardens have a Tree of Death and the answer is, Yes - they do. One of my clients, having wandered into sin and re-entered the garden before confession and healing, found herself standing by precisely this Tree, which Yah'shua (Jesus) identified for her.
Secondly, if we create soul-ties with unclean people by ignorantly or willfully sympathising with their sinful lifestyles and belief systems - in other words, opening our hearts to them - we open the door to the demonic entering our gardens and desolating them in the long-term. In the beginning they may simply take on the appearance of angels of light and seek to deceive so long as they can make good use of such a deception. Various clients have brought in all sorts of demons including Lilith, Hecate, Athena and others. Yahweh permits this so that free agency by be exercised by those facing temptation. If they do not yield to the temptation, then the demons may be quickly dismissed. If they yield to it, then usually the demon can escort the client out of the protecting garden and into their own. Having done that their goal is to get the client out of their own garden altogether and into some dark spiritual astral space where they may be the more readily imprisoned and placed in bondage.
People enter my garden in all sorts of different ways, starting in their own. One lady, an adopted daughter, found herself in a long dark hall surrounded by books on either side which led to a door which in turn opened into my garden. This represented the dark corridors of intellectualism devoid of the light of Messiah. She was herself an unbeliever at the time. However, I have to say that believers, like those Torah-teachers or Scribes I mentioned at the beginning of my sermon, can also live in similar darkness. Yah'shua (Jesus) said that these men had not only never entered into the Kingdom but actively sought to prevent others from entering also. There are many professing Bible-teachers today who call themselves 'Christians' or 'Messianics' who are little different - they are absorbed in the letter of the Bible never having tasted the spirit thereof. They can spout impressive scriptural knowledge and yet are dead inside because they have never entered the Garden of Yahweh in their lives. They fear revelation and divine encounters, for whatever reasons, and warn others not to paying heed to them. At the other end of the spectrum are the lawless charismatics who think that any good feeling is the 'Spirit' and therefore a sign that they are 'in the Kingdom', some even arrogantly boasting that they are 'in the throne room of God', people who have never tasted the true Ruach, let alone walked in it, because for them it is all either intellectual or psychic.
Having said this I do not want anyone to suppose that being in the garden is 'mindless'. It isn't. Yahweh speaks to both mind and feelings, the two operating as an echad whole. The words are spoken through the heart such that one can comprehend the theology and relate back to what one has read in Scripture. The feelings and throughts are consistent and harmonious, steered as they are by the Divine Mind and Heart. All who enter in and commune with the Saviour obtain their revelation directly froim Him according to the degree of their faith and openness.
What do I mean by that? Sometimes people ask questions and get no answers because they are doubting. Others receive very vague though perfectly true answers. We do not dictate the questions Yah'shua should answer. If the Ruach (Spirit) directs a question, answers are always forthcoming. By far the most just ask what it is Yah'shua wants to tell them and they simply wait on His Word. There is a 'knowing' that things are true which is beyond, and yet inclusive of, the mind, for nothing is mindless. The spirit may harmonise while the fleshy carnal nature registers protest and disbelief. The reactions of people in the garden are no different from those who are confronted with the truth who are not consciously aware or are able to see the garden. There is nothing 'new' in that respect. What might perhaps be said to be 'new' is when single-minded, pure-hearted people get clarity of direction as well as making heart-connections with others in a deeper way.
The garden is real but also symbolic - both propositions are true. In a way, the area of the garden in which a person walks adapts to that person. One lady I brought in recently had been horribly abused by satanists and had verbally renounced her faith under extreme duress. When she entered the garden she felt so heavy that she could not walk. I had to carry her. All around it was autumn (fall), the leaves were falling in bucket loads and were knee deep. The recent events had of course greatly distressed me and broken my heart so the scene was depictive not only of my own sorrow but of the dying which autumn represents. Once she had gone through the process of repentance amd healing, the autumnal scene disappeared and all was summer and brightness once more. Not only was she able to stand on her two feet but I also had the sorrow lifted from my own heart. The point of this is as follows: the garden reflects the changing 'climate' of our hearts. We go through ups and downs. The stronger and more consistent you become in your Gospel walk, the more constant the garden becomes.
In the New Jerusalem or the Garden of Eden in the final celestial world of the saints there is, as we know, no sun, because Elohim is its light. Sunsets and sunrises may be experienced in the garden. When people are spiritually tired, they sleep in it and rest, usually lying down on the ground or, if they are a close member of family, in the mansion house there which is my home. The garden changes with us, unlike the physical world outside - but in Yahweh's domain - in the highest level of the Garden - all is constant because Yahweh is constant: "Yah'shua the Messiah (Jesus Christ) is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Heb.13:8, NIV). One of my daughters experienced a sunrise and was told that one day there would be no more sunrises - "the sun of righteousness" (Mal.4:2) would always be there and never set.
If I get despondent or disturbed about something, those in my garden notice clouds appearing in the sky and sometimes the sky even going dark. They experience what I experience. As the patriarchal host, therefore - which is the responsibility of all fathers - consistency in the Gospel life is essential for the children who reside there. Their gardens grow in imitation of their father's. One son says that his garden is a smaller, younger version of my own, as seen by a daughter in the garden.
Love must be in constant motion for there to be growth. Yah'shua said: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" (Matt.5:6, NIV). If you do not have a hunger for the things of Yahweh, you will not be filled, and your garden will evolve slowly or not at all. This is a meaning of the parable of the talents (Mt.25:15ff). The Kingdom in you is reflected in your garden, and it grows only in proportion to the zeal you put into magnifying and multiplying those gifts He ahs given you. Our reward in the next life is already in the garden. Your garden, as it is, is what you get in the world to come. It is a fruit of the degree of your investment in Yah'shua (Jesus). The more you give, the more you get back, or as Yah'shua (Jesus) put it: "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you" (Luke 6:38-39, NKJV). A man reaps what he sows (Prov.11:18). If you sit in your garden and love no one but yourself, it will be a tiny garden with few fruits. If you open your heart to Yah'shua (Jesus) and receive those whom He sends to you (not those whom you choose to open to), then your garden will expand and grow. And the more you give, the more fruitful your trees will become, the greater will be the River of Life in you, the more fruitful will the Tree of Life be in you, and the more bountiful will the waters of love be in your lakes and streams. This is what Yah'shua Himself said - the rewards will be "put into your bosom", into your heart, into your garden.
Everybody's garden starts small and once they are loved, they will start to flourish. From a small pond, huge lakes can be made. One little truth received in faith can blossom into a mighty tree of wisdom. Yah'shua said: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches" (Matt.13:31-32, NIV). It starts small and it grows big but only if you nurture and water your faith - you must fill your life with scripture study, with prayer and praise, and loving those whom Yahweh has given you to love. It may be only one person to start with, and if it is, love that one person with your whole being. Then when you have fulfilled that commission, He will send others for you to love, and then more and more people, until your garden is full of people. But you must respond to the call, you must reach out and take initiative - He does not do it for you. So many people make the mistake of just sitting under a tree and waiting for Yah'shua (Jesus) to get into action and wonder why nothing happens. Edgeworth said: "The heart opens to the heart that opens in return". Yah'shua (Jesus) opened His Great Heart for us so that we could open ours to others. It's a dominoes effect. Start by opening your heart wide to Yahweh-Elohim and His Torah and then, when He has filled you to the capacity that you currently have, go and open your heart to others, and watch how that heart grows, and how much more love the Father fills it with.
However, you must be very careful how you open your heart and to whom. You may think there is a friend at your door and find that a bunch of enemies is concealed behind him. Therefore you must only open to those whom Yahweh says you may. Women in particular must beware because they are more vulnerable in this than the men. They are to be directed by their fathers and husbands, as Torah instructs. Men and women alike must make sure that the fence of Torah is in place in their lives, obeying the commandments and ordinances.
Once lady was shown that there was a wall around her garden. Yahweh impressed on her that she was never to step outside this wall. Inside was safe, outside dangerous. Men's gardens too are walled and they too must remain within bounds. As I mentioned to you earlier on, the word 'paradise' literally means 'a walled garden'. We are limited by Yahweh in our actions and freedoms: true 'freedom' is acting within the boundaries that Yahweh has set - remaining in your garden and not stepping out into the demonic realm or invading others'. Absolute freedom is a satanic mytth - absolute freedom is anarchy and lawlessness. Many have twisted the scriptures in the New Testament, for instance, to mean that the freedom that Yah'shua (Jesus) has purchased for us puts us 'above the law'. That is both a wicked lie and a pernicious heresy. The law or Torah is our fence of safety, the wall around Paradise, and anyone who steps outside it under the pretense of a mythical absolute freedom that Yah'shua (Jesus) supposedly gives is putting his head into a demonic noose. What is the 'freedom' we have in Yah'shua the Messiah (Jesus Christ), then? (e.g. Gal.2:4; 5:1) Is it to do whatever we like? No it is not. It is the freedom to approach Yahweh through the Messiah in confidence (Eph.3:12). It is the freedom to do whatever we like within the boundaries of Torah but not outside it, what James calls the "perfect Torah" (Jas.1:25; 2:12), the Torah which Yah'shua completed by His death on the cross. Rather, the freedom of the anarchists and lawless or Torahless ones is the one that Peter speaks of: "They promise them 'freedom', while they themselves are slaves of depravity - for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him" (2 Peter 2:19, NIV). And that, brethren and sisters, is a perfect description of satanism. There is Torah-freedom and there is lawless-freedom, the latter of which Peter says is used as a "a cover-up for evil" (1 Peter 2:16, NIV) by those who hate the truth of Yahweh.
Have we seen into the garden of someone in darkness? Yes my wife has. It was a dark and foreboding place. The water in the lake was filthy and it was guarded by a giant, ugly catfish-looking creature. All who entered into that lake - the heart-emotions of that person - were swallowed up into a self-serving soup of demonically-inspired death and destruction. You would think she was a lovely lady looking at her but her god is the demoness Hecate and all those who open their hearts to her become her slave. It was a lifeless garden, wild, unkempt, and rfightening. How did my wife get in? Because the woman in question 'loves' her and opened her heart to her. But my wife could not remain - it was spiritual death for her, and indeed had been so for years before.
As Adam was made the steward over the Garden of Eden, so you are the steward of your own heart and garden. Eve lived in Adam's Garden - hers was contiguous with his, merged as one, for she fully belonged to her husband. You single ladies searching for husbands, whatever you do, do not marry a man whose garden is smaller or darker than your own, for how else can you be cared for and loved? Your garden will become like his by union. Seek a man whose garden you thrive in for this is your heaven both on earth and in the world to come.
I want to end today with the words I started with: "Woe to you scribes (Torah-teachers), because you have taken away the keys of knowledge. You have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering". Brethren and sisters, from whom will you get the keys of knowledge of the Kingdom? For the choice is wide and varied. I started my Bible studies with the Jehovah's Witnesses years ago. They, like the Scribes, do not have the keys of knowledge. They are dead to Messiah for theirs, like that of so many religious people, is merely dead letter and erroneous dead letter at that. Likewise, do not go to those who appear to be 'alive' and 'spiritual' because they are full of energy and enthusiasm. What matters is truth, for truth defines love, and true love gives rise to purity and genuine peace and happiness.
The Way of Salvation is narrow and the gate small and few there be who find them (Mt.7:13-14). There are plenty of imposters and deceived people on the broad way that leads to destruction, all naming the Name of Christ and making great and pretentious claims, high and mighty, and giving many outward displays. Be careful. Only the truth is safe. Only the Garden Paradise of our Father is going to deliver us to an eternity of rest and happiness. The invitation is extended to all, but few are chosen (Mt.22:14) because they reject the Garden of our Elohim, preferring to wander in the illusion of the freedom of lawlessness, which is but an abyss to hell itself.
May you all search for the Garden, and when you have found it, enter it on the conditions that Yah'shua (Jesus) gives, as a little child, in all unpretentiousness and innocense. You will be welcomed by Yah'shua (Jesus) with open arms. Amen.
