The Garden of Yahweh
First Encounters
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
The autumnal festivals are over and we are slowly, if reluctantly, settling down for winter again after a summer that went all too quickly. The garden outside has been 'put to bed', as it were, and autumnal leaves are covering the lawns and roads like a yellow and red carpet. Nature is preparing for its long 6 month-long Scandinavian sleep.
For the last four weeks I have been telling you about the new course that Yahweh is setting this fellowship on and the revelation He has given to us on Gan Eden, the Garden of Eden. Last Sunday yet another person, the tenth, entered the Garden and began to taste of its delights. During the Creation week recorded in Genesis we learn:
"This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh-Elohim made the earth and the heavens, before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For Yahweh-Elohim had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. And Yahweh-Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Yahweh-Elohim planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground Yahweh-Elohim made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil" (Gen.2:4-9, NKJV).
There are many things we are to learn from this passage. Firstly, that there are two garden areas - the Garden of Yahweh which He Himself planted, and the Garden allotted to man, which he would one day till and cultivate. The first man did not have his own garden but, together with his wife, lived in Yahweh's very own. The primordial conditions on earth were unlike those we know today. There was no rain and no need to bring water by irrigation and other means because in those days the earth had a thick cloudy atmosphere which created a greenhouse effect a bit like the planet Venus today. As a result there was a more or less uniform temperature around the earth. During the night, when the temperature dropped, and warmed up again, the water in the air condensed into a mist which watered all the vegetation without the need of human intervention. Indeed, in the original Gan Eden, there is no indication that man had anything to do at all except name the animals and enjoy himself. This was not a place of labour but of rest. Mist was not, however, the only means by which the garden was water. We read:
"Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates" (Gen.2:10-14, NKJV).
Last week and the week before, you will remember, we discovered that the Garden of Eden, Paradise and Heaven are one and the same. Whatever existed in the outer, physical Garden of Eden must therefore have had a spiritual counterpart. In the Book of Revelation we read:
"Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of Elohim (God) and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations" (Rev.22:1-3, NIV).
This ultimate Garden, to which all believers are headed and are even today connected to by virtue of their faith in Yah'shua (Jesus), is also supplied by a river like the original Gan Eden. This river contains the "water of life" whose source is the Throne of the Elohim. You will remember from the Tanakh (Old Testament) that Yahweh tells Jeremiah that He is the "spring of living water" (Jer.2:13; 17:13). In the great prophecy about Jerusalem in the Millennial Reign, Zecharaiah tells us that "living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half to the eastern sea (Dead Sea) and half to the western sea (Mediterranean Sea), in summer and in winter" (Zech.14:8, NIV). And finally, in his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well of Shechem, Yah'shua (Jesus) promises her this same "living water" if she will but trust in Him (Jn.4:10-11). The living water that comes from Yahweh is channelled through Yah'shua (Jesus) to those who will believe and accept. Therefore the Messiah said:
"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this He meant the Ruach (Spirit), whom those who believed in Him were later to receive" (John 7:37-39, NIV).
We see, then, very clearly that this living water is no less than the Ruach haQodesh (Holy Spirit) Herself. Garden water is Ruach or Spirit which we are invited to drink. Interestingly, not only is She called "living water" but elsewhere Yah'shua (Jesus) refers to Her as "breath" in a resurrection appearance to the disciples. He said:
"'Peace be with you! As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you.' And with that He breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Ruach haQodesh (Holy Spirit)'" (John 20:21-23, NIV).
And as you all know, the Hebrew for 'spirit' is literally 'breath' and the Ruach haQodesh is the 'Holy Breath'. Remember these two keys, then, for the Ruach manifests as both water (or mist) and as breath or wind. Yah'shua further said:
"I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Ruach (Spirit). Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Ruach (Spirit) gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows wherever she pleases. You hear her sound, but you cannot tell where she comes from or where she is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit" (John 3:5-8, NIV, rev.).
It will not surprise you to learn that the Hebrew for 'wind' is also ruach which is a feminine noun which it why I have changed the gender of the wind from 'it' to 'she' or 'her' to be more grammatically correct. So remember this also: whenever you encounter water, wind, breath or mist in Yahweh's Garden. you are encountering the Ruach haQodesh.
There are many who believe the Garden of Eden was not a literal place but something symbolic only. There are many who likewise mark all the places described in the Book of Revfelation as symbols too. Certainly the language is unusual for those of us acquainted with the outer, physical world and yet we should not be surprised. For if Yahweh's thoughts and ways are not as ours, and are higher than ours (Is.55:8-9), then we should not expect the heavenly abode to be identical to the earthly in every respect. We have a tendency to mark down as 'symbolic' anything that does not accord with our literal physical world. By the time I have finished this series of sermons, I am sure you will think otherwise.
To be perfectly honest with you there was a time when I took the word of the scholars and regarded many of these things, particularly in the Book of Revelation, as solely symbolic. It is true that Yahweh must sometimes convey things to us in images and parables so that our finite minds can compute and make some sense of the infinite. Nevertheless, we must remember that we are not just finite beings. Yes, in our physical bodies we are both finite and mortal, and know it only too well. But we have a non-physical side of us that is not limited by this dimension. Last week I told you how the heart experiences time in different ways and how, in the world to come, there will be no time. Even in the span of earth history we have seen how time has changed. We recall the extreme age of the first patriarchs, some of whom lived to nearly 1,000 years. To us who live on average no more than about 75 we think this is fantastic and you who are in that age bracket today would, anciently, be no more than about 10 - your life would just be beginning! Amazing, isn't it? Caleb was vital and energetic at 85 so you can imagine how people then felt when they were 850! It boggles the mind.
I stand here before you as one of ten people that I know of who have visited the Garden of Eden. Many may find that fantastic if not absurd but I am neither joking nor lying. I am as sober as the scientist I was trained to be at Oxford University. Until this year, though, it was all a matter of theory and when I wrote my series of sermons called Garden of the Mind three years ago I was mostly thinking symbolically. How things change! How, then, did it all start?
Well, I got my first hints about three years ago when I was working with the victims of Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) which as you know is now the major part of my ministry. Two things happened then which fired me up with curiosity. Firstly, a client - who is now an adopted daughter - was going through a critical stage in her deliverance and was under strong demonic delusion. Under the prompting from her demons, she was about to end her life. I had worked with her for some time and we had come so far. It seemed as though all would be lost. I was talking to a part of her that was cold, calculating and without feeling. She had made her mind up to die and I was talking to her in what might have been our last conversation. She did not believe what I was telling her and I was desperate to save her life. So I frantically prayed what to do and the Ruach simply told me that if she wanted to know whether I was telling the truth or not was to touch my heart. I was astounded. How, I thought to myself, could she know the truth by simply touching my heart? And what did that mean? She was, after all, thousands of miles away on another continent. Yet I knew that this was the Ruach (Spirit) speaking to me and I knew it was the truth. So said. "Touch my heart and you will know whether I really love you or not." The girl knew she had nothing to lose and so it would do no harm in agreeing to my suggestion. And so she reached forth, in faith, and touched my heart in the Ruach (Spirit). In an instant she knew, with every particle of her being, that I was not only telling the truth - that I really loved her - but was also told by Yahweh that she was 'home' - she had found the place where she belonged.
Now there was no experience of entering a spiritual garden or anything like that - just a point of contact and an infallible knowing of truth. What this girl Rachel had done was touch my heart and receive a revelation from Yahweh. That one act of faith saved her life and changed mine. It opened up for me possibilities that I had never dreamed of. And only Yahweh could have suggested that for I would never have dreamed of making the suggestion to touch my heart. It was a revelation both for her and for me. She knew in an instant that she was loved and experienced love for the first time in her life after years of abuse, and I knew from that time onwards that I was her home and that she was family. She belonged. And it was a wonderful feeling, I can tell you. It made my love for her grow in one great quantum leap. Neither of us were ever the same. That one piece of heart-knowledge was to take her through the rest of her deliverance and bring us to where we are today.
From that day onwards I started inviting people to touch my heart if they were in any doubt that I was telling them the truth, especially SRA victims who have been so cruelly starved of affection through constant trauma at the hands of satanists. In almost every case I invited them to do this, something remarkable happened. They made a connection to the Messiah who is in my heart and who is yet also everywhere.
Which brings me to another interesting question. People often talk about Yah'shua (Jesus) being in their heart because they feel this great passionate love for Him. But is that literal? I once thought not - it was, in any case, too complex to understand, so I viewed it as some poetic way of describing an intimate contact between man and Saviour. Little did I know that Yah'shua (Jesus) literally does live in the hearts of believers.
Now in my brief three years as a Mormon years ago I was taught that this notion was a sectarian heresy. How, the Mormons reasoned, could a resurrected being dwell in a finite man's heart? Indeed, what did Paul mean when he said the Corinthian believers had "a place in [their] hearts" (2 Cor.7:3, NIV). You all know the expression - we say that someone is 'in' our hearts, and we all think of it as something poetical. But is it? What if there is a dimension where we can literally, even if it is not physical, 'live' in someone's hearts?
Now the literalists among us will doubtless smile and remind us that a man cannot be in more than one place at a time, which is true on a material level. But what is true in the physical is not necessarily true in the spiritual because we are not bound by the same laws of time and space there, as we discussed last week. I have done deliverance work with two clients simultaneously time and both have been speaking to, and seeing Yah'shua (Jesus), at the same time. True, the resurrected Christ can only be in one place at any one time but what is true of the physical body is not true of the spirit. 'Yes', some might say, 'but Yah'shua (Jesus) is Deity, and we are not.' Well, it is true we are not Deity, but is it true we are not elohim? The Bible says we are. It also says that we are made in Yahweh-Elohim's image.
I will say this much - people have seen and experienced me in more than one place at the same time in the spirit doing and saying different things. Now it could be argued that if this is so, and this is not mere hallucination, that this is something subjective and symbolic only, Yahweh's adaptation to out finiteness. Unfortunately, that is not good enough. What if two or more people are experiencing me together in one place and two or more people are experiencing me together at another? Is everyone mass hallucinating? The sceptics may believe so but we have who have experienced these things know otherwise.
We speak of Yahweh as being both omnipotent (all-powerful) and omnipresent (all-present). The spirit of the Elohim is not limited by time and space because they are above these things. And we too, you will remember, have this heavenly origin. Hopefully you will understand more of this as we go on.
I have told you the story about Rachel and how she touched my heart and experienced an inner knowing that saved her from death. She would later receive Yah'shua (Jesus) as her Lord and Saviour and experience a complete change of being. Later on I would travel to America to resume the deliverance of other parts in her system and whilst there I learned about the Garden of the Heart for the first time, and again, completely unexpectedly.
It all happened with a little girl called Tilly. After a long deliverance Tilly finally received Yah'shua and experienced the new birth. She was very young. As my wife, another minister and I sat with her she told us how she was together with Yah'shua (Jesus) in this beautiful garden talking to Him. She also informed me, much to my surprise, that I also had a garden and could meet Yah'shua (Jesus) there too. She made no mention of the heart that I can recall so I did not, at that time, make the connection between the two. I do recall how strong the Ruach haQodesh (Holy Spirit) was in that room and the wonderful peace that we all felt. And I remember longing to meet with Yah'shua (Jesus) in my own garden but had no idea how to do it. All little Tilly said was that one needed faith. It would be several years later before I myself saw my own garden for real and others began to experience the same thing.
So I owe a great debt of grattitude to Rachel and Tilly who were really the ones who started this whole new revelation and direction in which we are moving, though of course it is Yah'shua Himself we must ultimately thank because these are His gardens and it is from Him that the revelation ultimately comes. Not until this year did another lady enter my garden and experience wonderful healing at Yah'shua's hands. Since then, others have come in and have both experienced the same things and encountered one another. They have also seen their own gardens and moved within them, inviting each other in. But I shall be telling you more of this in the weeks to come.
Every heart has a garden. In the unsaved, these gardens are uncultivated, wild, overgrown and dark. Some are even desert-like and waterless. Demons lurk in them - yet even in the unsaved there are parts where there is light where they have learned to love and have adhered to truth. And when Yah'shua (Jeses) has been invited into their hearts, and they have been adopted by spiritual fathers into families of Messianic Israel, then wonderous transformations have taken place that reflect, naturally, in their emotional, mental and spiritual life. These new gardens begin to be patterned by their adoptive fathers, and their gardens resemble miniature versions of their father's as they grow and mature in the Ruach. These gardens begin to take on the appearance of a veritable pardises where others can enter and find peace and healing in the presence of Yah'shua (Jesus) who is the Lord of such Gardens. May you be blessed with a similar revelation and be able to crystalise out what you have where before only had hunches and have stumbled around trying to understand, in Yah'shua's Name, Amen.
