Sukkot 2005
The Sacred Garden of Yahweh
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
I welcome you in Yah'shua's (Jesus') Name to this second Sukkot sabbath, of which there will be three this year. I have to congratulate the sisters on the magnificent layout which seems to get better and better every year! It certainly gives a millennial flavour to the festival which in this sin-weary world I know we all cannot wait for. My job, and the job of other ministers like myself, is to prepare you for that happy time which Sukkot or the Feast of Tabernacles has, as its function, to orient us towards. My only regret is that many of my sons and daughters could not be here with us today. They are sorely missed.
As the decorations show, Sukkot has a strong harvest component. It is also called, therefore, Chag haAsif or the 'Feast of Ingathering' because it is the last harvest before winter. Thus Yahweh said to Moses:
"Celebrate the Feast of Harvest (sukkot) with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. Celebrate the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field" (Ex.23:16, NIV).
We ourselves have been gathering in the apple harvest from our orchard which is the last crop we bring in for the year. Everywhere in the farms in he Holy Land the granaries, threshing floors, and wine and olive presses are full to capacity. Weeks and months of sweat and toil have finally been amply rewarded. The farmer feels happy and elated so no wonder Sukkot has come to be called Zimam simchatenu, or the 'Season of Rejoicing', because full granaries and larders mean that one does not starve during the winter.
Yah'shua (Jesus) explained to His talmidim or disciples that this Feast of Ingathering has a spiritual meaning that is connected to the Olam Hazeh or end of the age. He said in His parable of the sower:
"The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are the heavenly malakim (angels). As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send out his heavenly malakim (angels), and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear" (Matt.13:37-43, NIV; cp. Rev.14:15; Joel 3:13).
Sukkot can only really be experienced by those who accept the Messiah because Sukkot is the gathering of the redeemed who are covered under the tent of Yahweh, as you are sitting under this tabernacle or booth (sukkah) today. For us today it is not easy to make cosmic connections - we cannot see or understand what it means to come under Yah'shua's (Jesus') covering for the Millennium and for the eternities. But when you are gripped with the spirit of Sukkot as Jeremiah was, when he saw those who were not harvested, then it becomes more sobering. Thus the prophet would lament:
"O my Comforter in sorrow, my heart is faint within me. Listen to the cry of my people from a land far away: "Is Yahweh not in Zion? Is her King no longer there?" ... The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved" (Jer.8:18-20, NIV).
Historically-speaking we are in the autumn (fall) of the world and Yahweh's messengers are frantically taking the message of salvation out to the world so that none will say, "The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved". And if you are a harvester as I am then I think you will feel the same anxiety for those who hesitate to choose. There are many. For those who do accept the invitation of the Messiah, they will experience Sukkot in the Messianic Age to come. Both Israelite and non-Isarelite will live in this kingdom. It will be filled with immortal people such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, David, Peter, John and Paul. But there will also be mortal people in it, the survivors of the end-time antichrist holocaust, those who trimmed their lamps and gathered on time into the cities of refuge - the people who survived the seven year tribulation known scripturally as the Chevlai shel Mashiach or "birthpangs of the Messiah" as the Messianic Kingdom is born in pain outwardly and physically. What a joy it will be to be living in that time together with our Master Yah'shua (Jesus)! Who can not desire that special blessings? And yes, some of you here today will be survivors and enter into the Millennium as mortals.
For us here today it is necessary that we start preparing for this time. There must always be preparation. Just as it takes time to build a city, so it takes time to prepare a people who are on the right spiritual wavelength. Most only have a vague picture in their minds what the Millennium will be like because they have never tasted that heavenly fellowship, let alone the biblical culture which is so very, very different from our degenerate Romaniased Western cultures and the pagan cultures of the East. Only once has Yahweh shown me in vision what the Millennium would be like and those images are permanently fastened upon my mind.
To understand the Millennium, to understand the Kingdom of Yahweh, to understand what Paradise is like and the natural state of redeemed men and women, you have to know about gardens, gardeners and gardening, both literal and figurative. The place which Yahweh made for Adam and Eve to live in was called Gan Eden or the Garden of Eden, or to be more exact, Gan b'Eden, the garden in Eden (Gen.2:8). Thus the garden was a part of Eden, not Eden itself, or to put it an other way, the garden was not co-extensive with Eden. Because the garden was in Eden it has come to be called the Garden of Eden. The word 'Eden' itself is an interesting one and comes from a Hebrew root meaning 'delight' or 'pleasure'. So when we speak of the Garden of Eden we are in reality speaking of the 'Garden of Delight' or the 'Garden of Pleasure'. However, the word also carries the meaning of 'delicate' which we must not overlook, coming from another word, adan meaning 'soft'. The Garden is therefore delightful, pleasant and delicate. Interestingly, it is masculine, the feminine form being ednah. Nevertheless Eden is not some coarse and vulgar place but is the epitome of male virtue as reflected in the Messiah, possessing both the strength of divine masculinity as well as its depth and delicacy. When some Greek scholars made a translation of the Old Testament they translated Eden as paradeisos, from which we get our English word 'Paradise'. This Greek word is itself a loan word from the old Persian pairidaêza which means an 'enclosure' or 'walled garden' from which we get the English word 'park'.
Now you are probably wondering why I am giving you this lesson in etymology today and the reason is that we have to understand the relationship between the Garden of Eden and what the New Testament calls 'paradise' (Lk.23:43; 2 Cor.12:4). The apostle John saw a vision and said: "To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God" (Rev.2:7, NIV). So it is written in our Greek-based translations but if you go to Hebraic sources you read: "To him that overcomes, I will give to eat of the eytz chayim (Tree of Life) which is in the midst of the Gan Ayden of Elohim" (ibid., RSTN). Or to put it into plain English: "To him that overcomes, I will give to eat of the Tree of Life which is in the middle of God's Garden of Eden".
The Bible starts with a garden and it ends with one. We know now that Paradise and the Garden of Eden are one and the same. Mankind started in a literal garden and it is going to end in one, confirming the many visions of heaven that true believers have had over the centuries. Note please that this is Yahweh's Garden, Elohim's Garden. He made it and He owns it therefore it must be an immortal place, a divine place, and must therefore be both spiritual as well as physical. That same Garden which existed physically upon the face of the earth at Creation exists in the heavenly realms too. When Adam and Eve were thrown out of that Garden, it was not destroyed, merely blocked by angels (Gen.3:23). Even after the flood, then, it must have been preserved and removed elsewhere.
If there is a spiritual counterpart to the Garden of Eden today, then a number of questions must be asked: Where is it located? and, Can we have access to it? Paul speaks of knowing a man who was taken to "paradise" (2 Cor.12:4), so clearly access to the Garden of Eden was available in his day. He had not experienced it himself and the person in question seems to have been uncertain as to whether he was in his body or out of it. And even though this was beyond Paul's personal experience, he clearly approved, and said of this man: "He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses" (2 Cor.12:4-6, NIV). Finally, Yah'shua (Jesus) promised the penitent man on the cross that he would join Him in "paradise", in the Garden of Eden. Three scriptures in the New Testament very clearly speak of people returning to the Garden of Eden, both in this life and in the next. And as we saw earlier, it is not really an option but mandatory, for only in the Garden is it possible to partake of the Tree of Life which Adam was forbidden to eat after he had sinned and fallen because this was a physical tree as well as spiritual so it would have made him immortal in sin if he had eaten its fruit. Yah'shua (Jesus) tells John: "To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of Elohim" (Rev.2:7, NIV). For overcomers of the Ephesian sin, then, there is an appointment with the Tree of Life in a Garden. And whilst the Scripture does not say that non-overcomers will not enter this Garden, they will be denied the Tree of Life until they have overcome this particular weakness. What was this weakness? Forgetting their first love, Yah'shua (Jesus) because they were so absorbed with exposing false apostles and other worthy things. And to which particular believers was Yah'shua (Jesus) speaking? To those from Ephesus, the seat of the Presiding Patriarch, which then was John the Apostle. This should be especially noted for we are ourselves a Johannine community.
Furthermore, Paul confirms that heaven and the Garden of Eden are one and the same thing in the passage from 2 Corinthians that I quoted to you - listen carefully to what he said: "I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know - Elohim (God) knows" (2 Cor.12:1-3, NIV). Then he goes onto confirm that this was Pardise, the Garden of Eden. So let's be perfectly clear - the Garden of Eden, Heaven and Paradise are one and the same thing. This is a place having both spiritual and physical dimensions. It is real and it is desirable, so desirable that Paul insists on boasting about it even though it isn't his experience but someone else's. Finally, it is clear that there are a multiplicity of heavens - how many, we do not know. Rabbinic tradition held that there were seven, and this particular Scripture holds that there were at least three, which agrees with what Paul says elsewhere about there being three different resurrection glories that he compares to the brightness of light emitted by the sun, moon and stars, respectively (1 Cor.15:41-42).
So what have we understood about this Garden? It is available now, at least in the spiritual dimension, together with the Tree of Life. Clearly it is not available in the physical dimension yet otherwise eating the phsyical Tree of Life would make us physically immortal which we cannot do so long as we remain in sin - this must await the resurrection which begins at Sukkot when Yah'shua (Jesus) returns.
Is there is a spiritual garden than we can enter and partake of the Tree of Life, where is it to be found? Since the Tree of Life was located in the centre or "middle" (Heb. tavek) of the Garden of Eden (Gen.2:9) then we should expect the spiritual equivalent to be located in the centre of both the spiritual universe as well as man's, since man must interact with it. Interestingly, the root of the Hebrew word tavek used in this passage for 'centre' literally means a 'bisection', a place where two lines cross at a point. Clearly is man and Yahweh are to meet, then they must 'bisect' one another - there must be a point of meeting. Man's centre must meet with Yahweh's. And where is that? The answer is, very plainly, the heart.
Now when we think of the word 'heart' we think of that remarkable organ that pumps blood around the body. Because we feel love in that region in our psyche and spirit, we have come to call the centre of emotion the 'heart' also. The Hebew word for 'heart' is lev or levav which has a root meaning 'centre'. The 'heart', then, is the centre of man - his universe, his personal being, which is why sometimes we translate the Hebrew nefesh as 'heart' too, that is, the 'soul'. The Scripures clearly confirm this:
"You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire to the very heart (lev) of the heavens: darkness, cloud and thick gloom" (Deut.4:11, NASU; cp. ASV).
Other translations right render lev here as 'centre', 'middle' or 'midst' (KJV, NKJV). Now the Scriptures rarely use lev to speak of the phsyiological organ, and for the Hebrew, the 'heart' or lev was the governing centre of all a man's attributes: physical, intellectual, spiritual and emotional. It is the heart, David tells us, that makes a man, or a beast, what he is (Prov.16:23; 23:7; Dan.4:16). It governs all his actions (Prov.4:23). His character, personality, inner life, will and mind are all modern terms which find their root in the Hebrew concept of 'heart'. It should not therefore surprise us to learn that there is a direct correspondence between the heart or a man and the Garden of Eden. Indeed, we discovered that this was so when when I preached to you over a seven week period back in 2002 in the series of sermons entitled, A Garden in the Mind. If you have forgotten this series, I invite you to become reacquainted with it and refresh your memories.
Over the last few years Yahweh has been preparing us for an astonishing revelation which culminated this year with some extraordinary spiritual journeys into the Garden of Eden itself. I shall be telling you more about this over the coming weeks. We have discovered - and scripture bears us out as we have seen - that the Garden of Eden is actually connected to each man and woman's heart, the centre of his or her being. Each soul has a garden which is his heart or centre, and each soul that receives Yah'shua (Jesus) as Lord, Saviour and King, surrendering His life to to the Messiah, becomes spiritually re-connected to the original Garden of Eden, which is Paradise or Heaven, not merely symbolically but in reality. Our changeover from the New Covenant Church of God to Mishpachah Lev-Tsiyon (Family of the Heart of Zion) this Sukkot, is intimately tied to this revelation from Yahweh and the most amazing adventure that those who have experienced this have ever been blessed with. To date nine of us have made these journeys and the accounts of everyone concerned corroborate one another down to the minutest detail. More importantly than what people have seen, however, is that it is within this place of beginnings - the centre of the soul and of Yahweh's universe - that people have experienced mighty miracles and healing that has resulted in a deepened awareness and communion of the Messiah, whose Gardens these are, and who controls all movement in and out of them and what happens in them.
I must at this point counter the accusation made by a current opponent of this work that all of this is just visualisation and therefore a demonic illusion. There are, to be sure, counterfeit gardens, just as Satan has always counterfeited all true spiritual phenomena. There are even occult groups who project into 'astral gardens' to consult with demonic 'spirit-guides'. Gan Lev-Tsiyon is not, however, astral but spiritual, belonging to the third (spiritual) heaven, not the second (astral) one which is demon-controlled. What people experience here is not, moreover, just an 'image' or a 'picture' - they are seeing with their spiritual eyes concrete, tangible activity depicted in spiritual language which is the reality of heaven. It resembles our physical world and yet in many ways is very different from it too. Demons fight hard to prevent people from getting into it and meeting Yah'shua (Jesus) face-to-face for deliverance. Those who enter are in full possession of their ordinary faculties, can leave whenever they want to, and can be about their daily activities while they experience these things. They do not astrally project either which is forbidden by Torah along with all occult arts. In astral projection the spirit leaves the body, mediated by demons, leaving the physical body in a state of virtual lifelessness as it roams around the astral and is subjected to demonic theatrics and, not infrequently, attack. No one ever gets attacked in Gan Lev-Tsiyon. These experiences are the meeting of hearts of fully conscious people who only enter the Garden by asking permission from Yah'shua (Jesus) and giving Him full control. Several people have seen the spiritual Tree of Life and partaken of it. There are people who are delivered from Satan who have been through this process and know it is true. That there will be opponents of this is inevitable, and they will never be convinced until they have opened their hearts fully to Yah'shua (Jesus) and seen for themselves, like doubting Thomas of old. Moreover, you do not need to 'see' this to be saved or delivered - it happens whether you like it or not if you are a committed disciple of Yah'shua (Jesus).
On Monday, when we meet again to conclude Sukkot, I shall be continuing the story of Gan Eden. Today has been a bit technical but it has been important to lay the biblical basis of what this is all about before we shart sharing some of our experiences. I will also be explaining how Gan Eden fits into the patriarchal system of the new Sukkot dispensation and how this differs so fundamentally from the old Shavu'ot one that has just passed away amongst us.
May Yahweh bless you as He calls those of the spiritual firstborn of Israel to partake of the spiritual banquet which He promised us so long ago which even now is finally taking place. Amen.
