Yom Kippur 2005
Crossroads of Opportunity
Main Themes:
Minor Themes:
We have gathered here today in obedience to our Father in Heaven's commandment to present ourselves to Him for judgment for the past year as individuals, as the Kehilat Lev-Tsiyon (Congregation of Lev-Tsiyon) and as the nation of Messianic Israel. Many may well be thinking that this is some quaint symbolic ritual that really isn't so important so long as our hearts have been basically in the right condition over the previous year. This day is not, however, a mere symbol, brethren and sisters - it is time especially set-apart and made holy by Yahweh for the purging of the souls of those who are truly obedient and repentant. It is not a small matter, it cannot be repeated at any other time of the year, and the consequences of disobedience are far, far greater than you could ever begin to imagine. Those who have not gathered today because they feared man more than they feared El Elyon have, by their choice, excommunicated themselves from Israel. But more than that - for anyone can force themselves to stop work and gather with others seeking to honour Yahweh - what Yahweh is today looking at is the heart - your heart and my heart - to see if we are in right relationship with Him.
I will not conceal from you the fact that this has, for me, been a difficult if not terrible month. I entered the Teshuvah period little conscious of what it was that Yahweh wanted to work in me and my family. By the time Yom Teruah (the Day of Trumpets) came I got a jolt and the panic buttons started being pressed inside, not simply because I became aware of what this sacred time actually was about, but because Yahweh started taking away fleshy props from under my arms and started blowing sand from under my feet. Things began to happen in the external world that began to unnerve me.
I have always wondered why autumn (fall) is a 'difficult' time for me and my family. Even before we were aware of Yahweh's Moedim or divine Appointments this was a tough time of the year. Originally I credited the season with that which was the problem because every autumn (fall) we face a fuel crisis. Last year we had the additional problem of our boiler breaking down which I can tell you filled me with no little alarm because the cost of oil is one thing but replacing a boiler is another. Yahweh did provide in the end but not through my own efforts even through pride and the carnal desire for self-dependency automatically wanted to make me do the necessary providing. In the end I had to sit back in faith, absolve myself of the guilt I always feel when others make sacrifices, and understand that whilst they were entitled to their blessings to make sacrifices (often quite major ones) I, myself, had to relinquish even more self-control to my Maker.
Obviously I did not fully learn the lesson last year and so, when Teshuvah rolled up again, Yahweh decided that two disasters were needed to shake me up even more. Firstly, He made sure our car was unusuable and would have to be scrapped by the New Year. Now as those who know us realise you cannot survive out in the wilderness with many dependants, when some of them are old people, without a car. However, I comforted myself with the knowledge that I had at least until the New Year to find a new car. That was not, however, good enough for Yahweh who decided that a little old lady should crash into the already condemned car to let us know that that particular car was finished now and had to be replaced now. This forced me to scrap the car almost immediately and to use the money I had carefully saved up for our oil supply to buy a new second-hand car. That left us penniless and with no oil for the winter, oil we would need to purchase within 4 weeks before the frosts came and we started to freeze in our house.
Now for a reason best known to our Heavenly Father, He decided that my faith needed stretching even more so he ensured that this year we could not even use our oil system. Accordingly, when the Inspector came along to check our oil tank, he declared it unfit to hold oil and I was forbidden to use it any longer. He was quite right, it was rusted through. So not only was I without oil, but without an oil tank and with a boiler that was on its last legs for it had only been patched up the previous year.
I will not go into all the calamities that have happened this autumn because that would only bore you, and it would not be to give a right balance, for marvelous and wonderful things have been happening too. My point in recounting these things to you is not, moreover, to evoke sympathy or to force anyone to open their wallets to help us out once again, but to share with you something of my Teshuvah journey. For two days I was, I will honestlty admit, desperate. Members of my adopted family were going through a major crisis without a home and money and another client was going through a major spiritual trial that had left me weak and exhausted from ministering very late into the night. Two nights ago I was being spiritually belligerant and telling my wife that I could not manage both my family and the ministry. She listened patiently and without the slightest iota of agreement while I grumbled and complained about my health and other matters. Part of me knew I was being ridiculous but the other part meant it. And when you split two ways - one part wanting to go one way and the other part wanting to go another - you stand at a crossroads in your life and have to make choices that will affect your whole future. You have to choose one or the other.
And that, brethren and sisters, is what Yom Kippur is all about. We are at a crossroads here today. We have seen - and our hearts have been broken because of it - yet more people, some of whom we mistakenly believed were rocks of faith - turn away and abandon this work. I don't know how many times we have sorrowed over such departures even though Yahweh has always warned us they would happen. And these departures have weakened the faith of some of those who remained because they had expectations of this work suddenly mushrooming and becoming 'great' overnight. We forget, though, don't we, the 'Gideon Principle' - how Yahweh reduces us to make us more dependent on Him. And we forget it regularly because we want Yahweh to do things our way. We come to believe that we 'deserve' certain things and when He denies us these things, our disappointment mounts and our faith wavers. And if we're honest this happens again, and again, and again. And we forget at these times not only the fact that Yahweh has predestined those souls who will be saved - we forget that it is not we who are saviours but He - we forget that numbers is not what matters to Him but quality of spirit - we forget, and we forget again and again. Therefore He sends us these Moedim like Yom Kippur to remind us that what we have got to be worried about is getting ourselves and (if we are men) our families right before Him. What's the use of being zealous missionaries as the Pharisees were in Yah'shua's day when our hearts are still not right? What do we do if we build a Church in a state of impurity? This is what the Master said: "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are" (Matt.23:15, NIV).
Now I am not saying that is what we have done. All I am saying is that this Kehilat or Congregation was not created by Yahweh to exist for itself or to become what the world calls a 'denomination'. We are a part of the nation of Messianic Israel. But to be that we have had to separate outselves from the churches and subject ourselves before the Most High for purification, something which the carnal nature revolts at because it wants to live and rule, not die.
One of my clients had a vision a few days ago as we were doing deliverance ministery. The terrible circumstances of her life had pushed her into a mode of self-dependency, survival-mode if you will. But now, when she was being challenged to release all to Yah'shua, as we are today at Yom Kippur, this survival mode was getting in the way of her salvation. We went to prayer and I asked Yahweh to show her the problem, because she was understandably scared to let go and trust everything to Him after a lifelong habit of taking care of herself. He showed her a vision of a house standing on sand. And then a strong wind came and the house collapsed. She recognised what she saw as something that had happened time and time again in her life as she had tried to manage in her own strength - one disaster after another.
And that, friends, is what happens to us when we try to do the same without Yah'shua (Jesus). Our pride in ourselves - the "pride of life" (1 Jn.2:16, KJV) - is the biggest obstacle that stands in between us and deliverance. We are proud in what we have 'managed', what we have 'achieved', how we have 'survived'. And we may indeed have accomplished great things in the eyes of the world, but you know, all this does is exalts self and puffs us up. And Yahweh abhors pride. What does He think of it? The Scriptures say: "Yahweh will destroy the house of the proud" (Prov.15:25, NKJV). Even those who have been treated unjustly? Even those who have suffered terribly from unrighteous men? Yes, it doesn't matter what your background is, because pride still remains the greatest obstacle of life, because pride exalts the self and removes us from the saving principle of faith and reliance on Yahweh for our life. Therefore what should each and every one of us be praying for this Yom Kippur? The Psalmist tell us: "Rise up, O Judge of the earth; Render punishment to the proud" (Ps.94:2, NKJV). And the apostles say the same thing: "Elohim resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6, NKJV; cp. 1 Pet.5:5). And it doesn't matter how right you are or how right you think you are, if pride is what you have built your life up on - your self-achievement, your independence, your strength, your qualifications for the job, or anything like that in any degree, you're at war with the Almighty, my friend! You may try to be as obedient as you can be to Yahweh but if you are lifted up in your pride you have missed the mark - you have sinned - and come under the judgment of Yom Kippur, because to enter the Kingdom of Heaven you have to come as a little child, not a a proud achiever (Mk.9:36-37).
Two nights ago I went to bed desperate but was wise enough to give everything to Yahweh before I closed my eyes in sleep. During the night I had disturbing dreams about self-reliance which I will not bore you with here. I will, however, share a vision I had on Tuesday morning. I saw the arms of Yah'shua (Jesus) outstretched towards me and something inside me must have clicked because the next thing I saw was a brown hen fly out of my breast and into His arms - and then another one, and another one, and yet another one. Four brown hens helds flew into His arms. And you know how limited chickens are in flight - they can only fly so high for a short period of time. And I knew, on one level, that these were unredeemed feelings or thoughts flying out of my soul and into the heart of the Messiah. I knew I was committing these things to Him and felt the panic disappear. As I speak now I stand before you with an empty bank account with no heating system and no fuel for the winter. It's already getting cold and by the end of the month the Scandinavian winter will be upon us. But I am trusting Him as I have told so many of our people to trust Him, so I cannot really do any less myself, can I? I have seen enough miracles in my life to know that He will always provide. And many of you listening to me today will know what I am talking about.
Brethren and sisters, today is a great day of opportunity for you. I realise that this Moed sounds ominous to many of you - the 'Day of Judgment' - but really, you know, there is a great cosmic Heart behind it full of love. What Yahweh wants to do more than anything else is to bless us today but He cannot do that until He has first stirred us up, shown us what we are and where we are, and given us the opportunity for repentance. Just as duty must precede pleasure so must repentance precede blessing, for what would be the point of Yahweh pouring His blessings upon us if the cup of our heart is turned upside and it all spills onto the ground of sin? Yahweh does not cast His blessings into an unrepentant heart any more than we should cast our pearls before swine. His love is costly - it cost Him the life of His Son on a bloody cross. Let us treat it with deep reverence and gratitude.
Last Sabbath I told you a little about the Azazel or scapegoat which represented Satan and onto whose head all the repented sins of Israel, past and present, were placed. There was, however, a second goat that was a part of the Levitical ceremony and we need to take a look at that today also. Of these two goats Torah says:
"Then he is to take the two goats and present them before Yahweh at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. He is to cast lots for the two goats -- one lot for Yahweh and the other for the scapegoat. Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to Yahweh and sacrifice it for a sin offering. But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before Yahweh to be used for making atonement by sending it into the desert as a scapegoat" (Lev.16:7-10, NIV).
These two lots or purim were called, respectively. La Yahweh ('to Yahweh' - or La Adonai, 'to the Lord') and La Azazel ('to the Scapegoat') and were placed on the heads of the respective goats. The La Yahweh goat was, as we saw from our text, sacrificed as a sin offering. Yah'shua in His first coming was a type of the La Yahweh offering (Isa.53:1-6; 1 Cor.15:3; Gal.1:3-5; Heb.2:16-17; 1 John 2:2,10).
In the ceremony of the goats, the two goats were considered as one offering. A crimson sache was tied around the goat marked azazel and at the appropriate time the goat was led to a steep cliff in the wilderness and shoved off. A portion of the crimson sache was attached to the door of the Temple (Beit haMikdash) before the goat was sent into the wilderness. As the goat met its end, the sache would turn from red to white, indicating that Yahweh had accepted their sacrifices and that their sins were forgiven, as it is written in Isaiah:
"'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.' For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken" (Isa.1:18-20, NIV).
The Mishnah tells us that 40 years before the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem this miracle of the scarlet sache turning white ceased which was exactly the time Yah'shua (Jesus) was crucified. For at that time whole Levitical system came to an end and this goat ceremony was no longer needed.
Brethren and sisters, let us with open hearts present to Yahweh our many sins of this last year. And let us do so without reservation for He is willing to take them and blot them out if we covenant to walk in holiness before Him and not turn to the left or the right from the narrow Way. The blood of Messiah saves us from the just wrath of Yahweh for our sins, iniquities and transgressions. Let us therefore, if we have not already done so, confess our sins to Him this evening before sunset. Let us remember what our goal is - let us remember that the whole point of everything is so that we can receive our inheritance as John the Apostle describes in the Book of Revelation:
"I did not see a temple in the city, because the Yahweh-Elohim Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of Elohim (God) gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honour of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life" (Rev.21:22-27, NIV).
Is that not a beautiful picture, full of hope and promise for the righteous? In the last few months several of us have seen this city a number of times. It is not only located in space and time but is also to be found in the heart of every true believer who worships Yahweh in truth, who has the testimony of Yah'shua, and who walks in His commandments of Torah. So I invite you back this evening at 5 p.m, to make confession with me and your families and then to share afterwards a meal to give thanks. On the coming Sabbath I will tell you about our future as a family of Yahweh and what He intends to do with us and the form this people will take as we prepare to celebrate in Sukkot (Tabernacles).
If anyone would like to speak to me this afternoon for counselling, as we prepare for the evening service, I should be happy to minister in whatever way I can. May you all in the meantime use the remaining hours that Yahweh has given to us to make everything right. I leave you now with the priestly benediction of Torah:
"Yahweh bless thee, and keep thee:
Yahweh make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
Yahweh lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace"
(Num.6:24-26, KJV).
Amen.
